When trying to access one particular git repo I'm forever seeing the attached error message:-

Capture-10.png

It doesn't happen every time I try that repo but it does happen quite a lot. Anyway...

After some online searching it seems that this can happen if TortoiseGit is sending the wrong type of authentication (e.g. Putty when OpenSSH was expected or vice versa) so I've contacted the repo managers to see if they can help.

In the meantime I opened my TortoiseGit settings and when selecting the appropriate Remote I can see a way of entering a Putty key if needed. But if it turns out that OpenSSH is needed (or something else) I can't see a way to set up any alternative authentication. Or does TortoiseGit only support Putty?

After starting Windows 11,  I have a popup to login for Pageant (putty).  If I don't OK that popup, then I get problems with my TortoiseGit (and previously TortoiseSvn) logins.  Normally I do enter the Pageant password, and I don't have any problems afterwards.   Are you using Pageant?  Maybe you are not always logging into it first, before using TortoiseGit?

Thanks Tony. I'd assumed that an authentication key would be some kind of file (or code) that I'd need to set up using TortoiseGit but I got a reply from one of the project managers and in fact, it's something I need to configure at  git.ardour.org  So I'm just trying to figure out how to do that.

I must admit though, I'm puzzled about why it sometimes worked and sometimes didn't ???
