Somebody just sent me a patch for me to apply to their code (which I
have in a local git repo) but when I try to apply the patch using
TortoiseGit it gives me the error "patch format detection failed".

I can't see any huge difference between their patch and various ones of
my own (which all worked when I needed to apply them). One difference
is right at the bottom of the file where their patch says "1.7.10.4"
whereas patches that I've produced myself say "1.7.10.msysgit.1".
Another difference is that their patch has a forward facing chevron
(">") as the very first character whereas mine don't. Could either of
those be the reason why their patch gets rejected?

The second difference seems to have been the reason for the problem.
That extra character looks like it might have been introduced by my
email client so please ignore this query.
