Synopsis
With all the interest in online social networking, especially around platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace and Orkut, it is important to realize that the wiki is at its roots an extremely social platform for online interaction. Nelson, our speaker for this session, will show how the social graph derived from the contribution patterns of participants in a wiki can be more informative than that derived from "friend" relationships in online social networking sites. Nelson is conducting ongoing research into how social network relationships within a wiki can be displayed to wiki users to enable them to more effectively identify individuals to connect with for collaboration and follow-up engagement. He is also evaluating how these relationships can be used as a metric of social capital – an important facet of the value that wiki use brings to an organization or community.
