hello all

can anyone suggest an easy to use free wiki service:
  • no need for collaborators to register
  • free
  • simple text editing, with little or no markup codes shown to users
google doc would have been perfect except you need a google account to edit docs.

thanks

derek

I use Wikispaces for all my courses.  It's designed for simple use - very popular among K-12 users.  Registration is very simple (and advisable - you do likely want some ability to determine who's doing what, if only to avoid spam...) and functionality is simple and relatively obvious to anyone who's used basic computing applications before.

Students in my courses self-register and populate the wiki quickly.  http://cct205-w09.wikispaces.com has been up for two weeks now, and it's already taking shape well.  Half the students were wiki neophytes, and they're already active.  Essentially, anyone who has 15 minutes to invest in signing up and playing a bit gets the gist of what's going on.  I play the CommonCraft Wikis in Plain English video to give the three minute intro to basic wiki philosophy and do a quick interface tour, and then let them loose.

I was big on PB Wiki, but am not so into the newer 2.0 version. I like Wetpaint a lot and have started opening new wikis up with that. There is an option to make editing available to anybody, no sign up required. It has a wysiwyg editor too.
