Are you an Indigenous grower looking to access land, equipment, and resources to start your own micro-farming business? If so, please consider applying for the Community Farmer program at Flemo Farm!

Flemo Farm is now accepting applications from Indigenous individuals or groups whose ancestors would have lived on any of the territories of the Mississaugas of New Credit, Haudenosaunee, and the Huron Wendat.

Flemo Farm is a new 1/2 acre urban farm in Flemingdon Park in Toronto's north-east. Part of the farm will be cared for by staff who will grow and harvest food with the help of residents through a volunteer program, as well as host public workshops, tours, and events (once the pandemic crisis is over). Another part of the farm will be plots for 5 growers from the local community who will operate micro-farm businesses through a Community Farmer program -- providing free access to land, equipment, tools, infrastructure, and supplies.

The Flemo Farm Steering Committee recognizes that Indigenous peoples once hunted, gathered, and farmed the land that is now Flemo Farm before they were forced or coerced off the land. So, one plot is being dedicated for an Indigenous grower or group who wants to operate a micro-farm business. Unlike the other Community Farmers, the Indigenous Community Farmer would not have to live in Flemingdon Park or in a neighbourhood immediately surrounding Flemingdon Park. We are putting out a call to all Indigenous growers across the GTA whose ancestors would have lived on any of the territories of the Mississaugas of New Credit, Haudenosaunee, and the Huron Wendat.

There is lots more information about Flemo Farm and the Community Farmer program in the document attached to this email, and even more on our website, www.flemofarm.ca. Please note that all the Community Farmer documents, and everything on our website, say that being a resident of Flemingdon Park, or a neighbourhood surrounding Flemingdon Park, is a requirement; but as this email states: this requirement is eliminated for Indigenous applicants. Also, please note that the website and documents also state that the application deadline is February 1st; but this deadline is being extended to February 8th for Indigenous applicants.

Please share this information through your networks.

Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.

FoodShare is located on the traditional territories of the Wendat, Haudenosaunee, Anishnabeg, and the Mississaugas of the Credit. We are grateful to live and work on these lands. We also acknowledge the many people of African descent who are not settlers, but whose ancestors were forcibly displaced as part of the transatlantic slave trade, brought against their will, and made to work on these lands.
