Hello Toronto Urban Growers:

Scadding Court Community Centre is looking for 3-4 galvanized steel raised beds for our community garden. Does anyone know where these can be sourced? I've done a search online but can't seem to find what I'm looking for.

For reference, we'd like to purchase something like these beds from a community garden in Ottawa:

Any leads you can share would be much appreciated!

Conquest Steel will make these for you.  I have them at our Urban farm and have had them installed in multiple other teaching garden locations .  They are incredible and durable.  There are fixed heights, but the other two dimensions of your planter are customizable.

They are two pieces that screw together and they can deliver them on a flatbed truck- or if they are short enough you could pick them up.

Hi Katie,
I know a garden that had success with Sproutbox gardens. There are also these ones from Vego.

A much more practical and affordable solution is our Caja sub-irrigated planters, in 30-inch high stands,
They use 60-80% less water, and are portable.

Yes, they work, and we love them! They warm up faster than in ground gardening. We already have mustard greens planted outside. Our sweet grass I also starting to grow.

Ours beds from:

If you wanted colour, you could try using this product, a bit more expensive, but nicer looking:

Hi Katie,

Good to know that you plan to invest into solid raised beds.  This type of beds have been installed for many years now in the Allan Gardens space, and this space was expanded and transformed last year.  I am cc:ing Matt Canaran, the ED for Friends of Allan Gardens who was involved in the planning and implementation of the transformed garden space.  He can probably put you in contact with the landscape architect who designed the garden.  Matt, can you help Katie?  Also, maybe you can advise her of the workings of such containers as raised beds for vegetables, from your experience?

I hope this is helpful!
Joe

We’ve installed both the RBG and the Sproutbox beds for clients and at our landscape yard.

Both are very good. The RGBeds are not as nicely finished, so tops are very thin and unprotected, and seams have sharp edges, especially at the corners. Galvanized steel finish only.

The Sproutbox product is quite nice. We’ve had them at our yard for a couple years now and they seem to be holding up. Powder coated finish seems solid. Comes with crossbars to help minimize bowing of the bed walls. Top edge has a rubber gasket that gets applied during assembly which softens the top edge, and the vertical seams don’t present as sharp, so they feel “safer”.

Still, we prefer wood in the end. Can't apply nails and screws to the steel beds, as us gardeners are want to do as we are creative and innovative types. Plus, ambient air temperatures get transferred much more efficient to the soil and plant roots, which is not what we want. Wood is a much better insulating material, thereby maintaining more consistent, less fluctuating soil and plant root temperatures.

My 20 cents (2 cents adjusted to 10 for inflation, adjusted to 20 for tariffs. Elbows up!)

Thank all.

By the way, the RGB product is manufactured by Conquest Steel, in Vaughan (I think)., I think. Beds can be custom sized except for bed height.

The Sproutbox is out of BC ( I think) and comes in kits that allow you to assemble in a variety of shapes. This can lead to a lot of unused steel panels.

Joe, have you seen our wheelchair accessible garden beds at Allan Gardens? We’re so proud to be a part of that wonderful space!

Marc, many of us are collectively proud of the seed planted a decade ago (in 2015) in the little Edible Allan Gardens project and it has blossomed into a great space.

FYI, folks, today at Allan Gardens, you can catch the Farmers' Market (now extended as a yearlong market) combined with an Easter Egg Hunt.  And you can check out all the beds in the garden space, including the BUFCO raised beds...

Greetings from Paris.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your great advice on raised beds! We ended up going with Sproutbox, mostly because the beds we wanted were in stock, while other companies seem to have very low stock at the moment.

My next question for this group is about container soil. Does anyone have suggestions for local soil companies that sell high quality container soil and offer delivery?

I think we'd be looking for about 2 cubic metres of container soil.

Thanks in advance!
Katie

Call Pure Life soils, you’ll want to get their potting mix, which has about 30% worm castings for nutritional content, yet stays light and fluffy in a container (triple mix will compact and compress in containers).
