Please let me know if you can suggest a solution:

One of my good friends, who is very organic, very careful and particular about her own health and the health of her gardens and lawn, always careful to use natural solutions asked for my help.

I'm going to the US next month and she asked me to bring something back.
I understand her frustration, I don't want to do what she is asking me,  I feel badly about saying no as she has done so much for me when I realized a solution for me is to ask others - such as this list - for a possible - and better - answer to the problem which is why I'm asking you for help.

" I am in desperate need and ....   I had this super invasive root system take over my garden.  Off shoots from a tree I bought.   The nursery I bought it from wants nothing to do with my problem.
I paid $600 to have the garden dug up, but the root system continues to grow.
It makes tons of shoots all over and spreads like wild fire .
So far I had 300 sq feet dug up, but much more needs to be done
I have no where else to put all this dug up soil, so I need a new solution.  I was asking all over , nothing.
Finally found a youtube where the guy puts a little bit of Roundup on the tips of the shoots and he claims that it works it way down to the roots and kills off the root system.  I would not spray it on the grass , just on the tops of the shoots.   The helper who helps me with the garden tells me the Roundup sold in Canada will not do, because it does not have that particular killing ingredient that the RoundUp sold in the US has.  It was banned in Canada years ago.
Could you bring me back some from the US when you go?  It is sold in Home Depot in the States.

If you don't want to take that chance I understand.  If you prefer not to, do you have any other ideas how I can get my hands on US roundup. "

If you can offer me other solutions, or have questions, please reply to this onlist or email me offlist.   I don't know what kind of a tree this is, but I can ask.

   Thank you.

I think your friend already gave you what you’re looking for: “If you don’t want to take that chance I understand…”
If it’s banned in Canada then you can’t legally bring it over the border.

Hi Marc - thanks for considering this.  yes, I do not want to bring it here.  For me, its not a question of legality, for me the issue is I do not want that stuff used here.

I was hoping that someone would have a different solution - a different product - a better method.  US roundup is not, IMO, a solution to this problem.

The main ingredient is glyphosate in both countries and it’s very effective at wiping out everything that it has been sprayed on. I think that your friend is misinformed.
I did a quick search and there has been no changes to the formulation of the product.
I have Tree of heaven shoots in my yard and I spend 30 minutes every single week pulling them up. I feel her pain. There is no solution.
I use round up to tackle poison ivy as I’m allergic to it and have a stronger than usual response. Now that I’ve been spraying the patches for 3 years I have pretty much eliminated it
I’m sure that it would work on the tree of heaven shoots but I would need gallons and they’re just a nuisance not dangerous.
I’m a beekeeper and I don’t take herbicide use lightly but I can’t afford to walk through poison I’ve on the paths in my garden and pulling it is ineffective as is covering it with layers of cardboard.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Hi Marylin
I’ve worked with essential oils for over 25 years, as a professional aromatherapist, and know that some oils are excellent herbicides.

If your friend doesn’t find another solution tell her to contact me and I’ll tell her how to use a couple of oils in the correct concentrations to test on her shoots, with a natural solution ‘solution’ 😬

Here’s a sample article on essential oils bring tested for their efficacy:

We wanted to chime in here.

To us, it sounds like you are talking about the horrible bindweed which is near impossible to get rid of once it’s root system has been developed. It also sounds like you are thinking of bringing over the illegal Round Up which contains the highly effective weedkiller glyphosate. You are not allowed to use this product in soil, lawns, gardens or to kill weeds in Canada.

There is no real solution to this problem other than that product at this time. You can try and starve it with drought but allowing other plants to develop in bunches may help. We’ve also heard of people digging out an entire yard 18 inches deep and placing 6 inches of solid concrete down, then filling the rest with new soil that hasn’t been infested with bindweed.

I know these aren’t great solutions but until an effective legal method has been developed, you will have to try and cope.
