Subject: Open Consultation on Canada’s Food Systems - Deadline 6 May
To: Orlando Lopez <orl...@foodshare.net>

Dear Food Secure Canada members, allies and partners,

The Government of Canada is holding a public consultation on its national approach to building healthier, more sustainable and more equitable food systems, to conclude its submission to the 2021 UN Food System Summit. We warmly encourage individuals and organisations across the food movement to respond to the online questionnaire by the deadline of Friday, May 6th.

Food Secure Canada welcomes this consultation because it is a chance to comment in one place, on many different aspects of our interconnected food systems. There is potential for this consultation to influence much needed policy and programming towards food justice, health and sustainability. You can choose to answer comprehensively, or jump just to the section(s) that interest you:

  • Eliminating Hunger and Reducing Food Insecurity (p.5)
  • Reducing Food Loss and Waste to Support Sustainable Consumption Patterns (p.6)
  • Strengthening Indigenous Food Systems (p.7)
  • Promoting Sustainable Production (p.8)
  • Supporting Local Food Economies (p.9)
  • Improving Human and Animal Health (p.10)
  • Priorities for International Collaboration (p.11)
  • Open section for any additional comments (p.13)

You may wish to refer back to Food Secure Canada’s action plan Growing resilience and equity, or our Eat, Think, Vote election 2021 Policy Briefs for inspiration as you answer the questionnaire. Also, the Coalition for Healthy School Food has prepared model answers for each section towards advancing a universal, healthy School Food Program for Canada.

Food Secure Canada advocated for years for the Food Policy for Canada that launched in 2019, but the policy has yet to be adequately financed or advanced comprehensively with a whole of government approach. This consultation is an opportunity to reinforce its importance, and advance and elaborate its vision. We welcome the recognition of the role of food systems pathways towards meeting the Sustainable Development Goals.

Best regards,

Food Secure Canada team
