Hi all,

In the Colloquium at the University of Toronto this week, there will be at talk that I'd like to call your attention to: Phil Sosoe, a leading expert in percolation (among many, many other topics) will speak. It is in Bahen 6183, 4:10-5:00, Wednesday Nov 30

Speaker: Philippe Sosoe (Cornell University)

Title: New exact scaling exponents for high dimensional percolation

Abstract: Bernoulli percolation is a stochastic process originally introduced to model the flow of fluid through a porous medium. Despite its very simple definition, it has turned out to be one of the most interesting models in probability theory of the last half century. The most dramatic progress has been on the 2 dimensional version of the model.

In this talk, I will quickly review the basics of percolation, and then discuss critical percolation in high dimensions (d > 6 or d \ge 11, depending on whether you are a physicist or mathematician). In particular, I will then discuss some recent and ongoing work with Chatterjee and Hanson on critical and near-critical scaling exponents and the distribution of the chemical distance.
