I have a site that I forgot to upgrade from 1.5.0 and that got hacked
last week. I've taken it temporarily down and now want to upgrade to
1.5.6.

Are there any instructions around to do this? Are there any changes to
the DB tables between versions, or is it a straight forward file
replace?

Many thanks.

If you are working from the hacked site, you might also want to make sure that no additional extensinos got installed that you hadn't intended, or that no files extension files got replaced which could leave holes open.

Also, verify that you have not lost some of your content.

also, if you are hosting this with a provider, ask then to install a
back up from before the hack for you .. then upgrade
it will help in the process and could prevent further exploits as
well.

Restoring from a backup really is the best way to do it.

Delete first and restore the backup.  Otherwise, you could be opening yourself up to problems down the road.
