Hello,
I called Rogers and asked if they support Joomla as a CMS with
their business web hosting as they only list EasySiteWizard/Pro as a
CMS. The customer service rep I talked to, although nice, had to
check. She confirmed that I could install Joomla myself, and she
wasn't able to provide me with a list of client website actively using
Joomla. And...she had to fax me the answers, no outbound email allowed
from her call centre...amazing!

As such, I don't have a warm-and-fuzzy feeling about installing Joomla
on a rogers.com hosting plan. I need to have some confidence it will
work. Yes, I'm familiar with Joomla installs on other hosting service
providers.

Anyone in this group successfully install and actively using Joomla
with Rogers? Any tips 'n tricks I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance,

Jack

Do you really need more information to realize and conclude that if you
install at Rogers you will be flying solo?
Go with Rochen - they are best of breed for a reason.

G.D.
Thanks for the quick response, opinion and pointer.

Yes, I am assuming at this point I'd be flying solo, which is not
ideal but an option to consider all the same (even if it's only a
short-lived idea).

With a name like Rochen, you'd think they were a Canadian company, but
no...

No,
Rochen is based in the UK and has support staff in the US and Australia.
The forums are active and are monitored by the support staff.
Chris, the president, gives out his e-mail and phone number for use when
his staff has provided less than perfect and prompt support - it's rarely
used,
but in the rare cases it has been used, his response is instantaneous.
They are very up front and transparent in the few instances that they have
had service breakdowns. They are heavy and recurring sponsors of
Joomla events including the upcoming CMS Expo, know the the software
and serve on the bug squad.

The bigger advantage is the peer to peer advice provided by customers in the
Rochen forums - people are quick to suggest extensions to solve issues where
they have had a good installation and maintenance experience - sharing the
pros
and cons of extensions they tried when faced with a similar task.

I have worked with several other 'Joomla' hosting specialists and the others
just
provide a Fantastico script for installation and support for FTP, PHP
configuration,
and access issues. They are clueless beyond that. The Rochen folks will
officially
support all these same issues with gusto, but will unofficially go the extra
mile and
help with SSX vulnerabilities, core configuration errors, and more.

I have been migrating clients to Rochen whenever the opportunity presents.
The price is right and the service is stellar.

A couple of the guys in the JUGT provide hosting (I'm not one of them
btw). Why not support a JUGT hosting provider? The guys that I know
who do this are excellent and Joomla! experts to boot. I do this for
my important sites.

Rochen is good but so are the guys in the JUGT.

Something to consider.

Totally agree with buy local. You and others will have to chime in on who
you are using.
So far no one has spoken up with specifics.

Maybe a list of services provided by JUGT members would be a good thing to have?

Joe etc, Think you could get a resources page up on the toronto site?

joejoomla.com is hosted by Abivia as shown on the home page of the
JoeJoomla site.

That's a JUGT member's hosting service.

Jack - why are you considering Rogers? Most large telcos offer hosting as a
benefit to their phone/data customers that don't know better and what the
convenience at a PRICE!

The fact that they are not up with basic tech should alert you to the risk
of hosting with them.

There are a number of hosts that provide/support Joomla! installs - I'm sure
some of the group members provide this service. I used a large host that
does not formally support Joomla! but I have not had any problems for the
past 6-7 years that I've been using them.

Bhupesh,
I am considering Rogers only because I have a potential client that
already purchased his domain name and hosting plan with them because
he had planned to create his business website himself, then realized
he needs help.

My freelance work, to this point, has been all word-of-mouth, and I
have been, typically, attempting to work within the 'confines' of the
client's hosting plan and service provider. It's akin to building a
solution in a client's garage with his tools, versus my own. I'd
prefer to work in my own garage with my tools, but sometimes, it's not
feasible. However, I do learn the good, bad and ugly of all the garage
tools out there...

I appreciate hearing from both sides of the fence, and I look forward
to a resource listing showing Canadian Joomla Hosting options, ratings
on service providers would be a nice touch too, eh!

Hi all,

Although we are a silent partner to the JUGT, there are a couple of topics on this thread that I want to respond to.

A couple of the guys in the JUGT provide hosting (I'm not one of them btw). Why not support a JUGT hosting provider?

I am one of those "guys" that provide quality Joomla hosting accross Canada.  Our company has been hosting Joomla sites, since Joomla's beginnings and going way back to 2003, hosting Mambo sites before Joomla was born.

Currently, we host (for free) these two sites, http://toronto.joomla.ca and http://vancouver.joomla.ca (Joomla Canada ) and soon we will launch (maybe even as soon as next week) the www.joomla.ca site as a resource centre for all things Joomla in Canada.

Lévis and I are one of the founding members of Joomla as well as the JUGT. We have since given the reins to your local team that you have already in place since we live in Quebec and our intention in the beginning was to be a silent partner to the JUGT once the JUGT were on their feet.

Our goal is to help to promote other JUGs across Canada and provide them with some support to help them get on their feet too. I am personally active on the Joomla User Group Team having been a Joomla Core Team member for 4.5 years.  Lévis has been a Joomla Core team member for 4 years.  We have both stepped aside our Joomla Core team duties since last year, although Lévis still takes care of the Joomla Demo site till 1.6 is stable when a new team will manage the Joomla Demo site for OSM.

A New Joomla Canada Services Directory

Maybe a list of services provided by JUGT members would be a good thing to have?

Joe etc, Think you could get a resources page up on the toronto site? - Jason

This Joomla Canada resource site will have a Canadian wide service directory for Canadian Joomla developers, template designers, hosting and solution providers etc...

I have already given Alan a sneek preview of the site, although it has much changed since he peaked at it about a month ago.  This is the text that is on the home page explaining the mission of the site.

About Joomla Canada

Welcome to the new Joomla resource site: Joomla Canada!  This site provides the following services: News and Newsfeeds, Site Showcase, Joomla User Groups Listings, Services Directory, Events Listings, Extensions Directory as well as important Joomla links. We hope that you find what you are looking for.

All listings in the directory will be free for companies, organizations and individuals. As well, there will be sponsored listings - Google style ads.

If anyone has any questions about our companies's hosting services, please send me an email to our company email, in...@popcliq.com.

If you have any questions about the new soon to be launched Joomla Canada resource site, www.joomla.ca, please be patient until it goes live, hopefully next week and maybe sooner if all goes well.  Any questions about this site can be sent using the Joomla Canada's contact form on the site for inquires.

We plan to give first priority to the JUGT members that will offer Joomla based services to list in the directory, of course for free. We wish to continue to partner with JUGT.

I was trying to with hold chiming in as "One of those guys". But I guess
I should toss my hat into the ML ring.

I too host Joomla! Sites, I've been in the hosting biz for a number of
years with various providers and now do this as a secondary to my Open
Source, and Security Consulting. I too go way back in the Joomla!
history, not as far as Michelle etc, but I was one of the main coders
for 1.5 and now sit on the Security Team as an Advisor. I also was the
first Official Speaker for a JUGT meeting, and first guest interviewee
for Joe ;)

Anyway, look forward to the resource.

Regards,
Jason.

(Yes, one of these days, I'll fill out the forms for the main J!
resource page too)

Yes, I remember, we had our first mini Joomla Day (actually it was in the evening).  We had a great time with Ian speaking as well.  It was at this that we met Joe Joomla and many others who are still part of the JUGT providing support and leadership.

One thing that distingues our JUGT is that many of our members are active volunteering in Joomla Project.

Hi Jack,

So basically you need to ensure that Rogers works for you with Joomla! Or,
convince the client to eat the cost and do a redirect on the domain name to
a good Joomla! host.

I like your analogy! I see there are two options from the Joomla! community.
If you twitter, you can also tweet "looking for Joomla! hosting" with the
hashtag #joomla...be prepare to get inundated with offers :)

The problem with ratings/opinions, to use your analogy, is that each driver
is different in how they assess a mechanic. Some want a quick in/out and
don't care for the details, used parts etc. Others want to be right there
under the hood. Their recommendation will be based on their own experience
which may be unique!

So...there are service providers within the JUGT family, another in Montreal and another in the UK.  The benefit of going local is that you get support from those guys as well as the rest of the JUGT members. I personally know Jason and Alan (Abivia) – they are both top-notch technical guys that probably went through whatever issue you might face.

Just my two cents...Bhupesh
