Hi all,
I am a web designer/developer in Toronto, (Riverdale) actually, and am
pleased to find a Toronto Joomla group.

i was wondering whats happening, and if i'm missing all the fun, or
perhaps there isnt any fun happening to miss.!?

I have been building Joomla sites for about 4 years now, and love
Joomla.

I am hoping that i can hook into the group and participate. If there
is nothing going on, maybe i can help start something up.!

I live at Bain coop and we have a great room i can get for dirt cheap
and have meetings, Parties, networking gatherings, whatever we want to
call them.

I would be really interested in doing something to spread the word
about Joomla and maybe even run seminars on site building or SEO
techniques or something else for small business owners.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to meeting you all.

Don't be shy, Get back!

Hey Vic,

Where is Bain coop? It seems to me that the challenge has been finding someplace central with easy access to highways and parking.

FYI - your contact us link returns a 404 error. If I go via the menu,  I see the text and the box but nothing else.

Regards,

Bhupesh

Vic,

Thanks for your kind offer. Looking at the site, it looks like
members would pay $15 for the first hour and $5 for each additional.
Therefore, a 3 hour meeting will be $25, which is certainly dirt
cheap. With coffee, water and Timbits, a budget of maybe $75-100
would be sufficient, depending on number of people attending. There
would simply have to be a small fee to attend.

As I am in Brampton, likely only a Sunday meeting would work for me as
the rush to get down there after hours during the week would not be
worth it. (I didn't renew my membership in another organization for
this reason.) That day would be best for travel time and street
parking, but we would have to see if others are willing to attend on a
Sunday.

I would propose an initial meeting to dicsuss ideas about what this
could be and how we should structure it. We could have such a meeting
during the month of November (subject to availability of the room)
with a view to starting regular meetings / events in Q1 of next year.

Does this make sense to people? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone? :)

BTW - your ProTouchDesign.com link will resolve if you add /index.php.

Cheers,
Matthew

Life has been really busy here.  But I could possibly make a meeting in November.

Is anybody else interested?

Please keep in mind that although I now live in the east end of Mississauga vs. the west end (of Mississauga),
any meeting in the east part of Metro Toronto could see me spending even more time on buses going to a
meeting and returning home than at the meeting itself. Would it not be better to try to have a place to meet
either in central Toronto or Etobicoke instead. Keep in mind, with no wide distribution of groups for Joomla!,
a more westerly location would suit those that would care to come also from:
         Mississauga
         Oakville
         Burlington
         Hamilton
         Brampton
         Georgetown
        even Kitchener

That is quite the list of addtional cities. I missed a lot of TLUG meetings because it was just tooooo far to go.
That may very well be the case for me if you meet in the west end. In contrast, what is there of size east of Toronto?
Pickering? Ajax? Oshawa is already a few miles out.

<fingers crossed>

OOPS! Dumb typo <sigh>. Make that "if you meet in the EAST end". Sorry.

I am open either for a weekend or evening. I am coming from an hour east of
Toronto, and would tie a week day in with business so would prefer that.

Just pick a date and lets see what the response is.

Cheers, Richard : )

It seems like the folks at http://linuxcaffe.ca/ would be supportive to our cause, if that is what we want, and if it is more convenient for people.  It is located at 236 Harbord St.  http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=236+Harbord+St,+Toronto,+Toronto+Division,+Ontario,+Canada&sll=43.664038,-79.40815&sspn=0.010974,0.027723&ie=UTF8&ll=43.66157,-79.409544&spn=0.010975,0.027723&z=16&iwloc=addr

It is about 400 metres from Bathurst Subway station, which may be easier to get to that Riverside (I don't know how one goes about getting there).

Would have to be an evening for me, after 6:30 at least.

Hi Bain Coop is just 1 minute streetcar ride south from Broadview
subway, which is 4 stops east of bloor and young station. how much
would a meeting at the linuxcafe be? Perhaps they will become our
sponsor? It might be more comfy?

Actually i just would like to see a monthly meeting schedule. Can we
all say where we all are and make a decision about that, how many of
us are there interested in this?

I was thinking that holding free seminars for web developers ALL OVER
GTA can get us some exposure and customers. I can lecture on web
design, web graphic production, joomla website development and SEO.
The big room at bain coop is good for central and eastern targeted
events, and we can find other similar good rooms in the west end ?

I agree with Matthew.

I am interested in meeting and would prefer it be on a Sunday as well.  I live in Richmond Hill so Mississauga (east or west) does not make a whole lot of sense for me.  If that is not possible, someplace with convenient parking in Toronto would be ideal.

Just a thought - since we all are/should be reasonably tech savvy, why not also consider virtual meetings to keep the group alive and engaged? My experience with other groups is that everyone gets busy and cannot afford to devote 2 hours travel time for a 2 hour get together each month.

Bhupesh

These meetings sound great.

Personally I would love to attend but being a student in Peterborough complicated this. Maybe a podcast or somebody taking minutes would allow those members not present to be able to get access to the ideas and topics discussed while sharing them online like lectures of some sort. My web hosting isn't really being used since I won't really have free time until Dec so I could host them (eg, lots of unused bandwidth)

Cheers,

Simon

I am fine with Bain as I live in Whitby so I am east end too. I think
what we all need to do is find out where we all are then plot it in
Google maps and decide a location based on that?

That may help although it is worth keeping one fact in common. Ultimately there is a limit to how far and wide you can
service an area. For only one location, probably a place in downtown Toronto would be the most neutral for both east
and west attendees. This is in no small part because of how well it is serviced by the subway, TTC, Go buses and trains.

Otherwise, there is a need, perhaps, for even an eastern group and a western group. Keep in
mind for the western direction there is still a much higher total population that can be served when you include overall
population density around Lake Ontario (including Etobicoke,  Mississauga, Brampton, Oakville, Burlington and even
other places such as Hamilton, St. Catherines, and outlying smaller cities and towns)..

The only other solution that comes to mind would be to meet alternately one time in the east end, next in the west and
and so on. Also, I have some past experience in getting a Linux and programmer's group organized monthly at Mulligans
Bar and Restaurant in the Woodchester Mall, Mississauga. The food was good, we averaged 8 to 12 people each meeting
and there was a lot of good fellowship. The down side was that there was no lecture or presentation facilities. Because
of this, the group decided after a year to meet at Sheridan College where they could put on presentations. If either an
east or west location is chosen, having just a social meeting at the alternative end of town could be another pleasant
choice for those that could not travel so far.

Is any of this any virtue?

(BTW - I have just finished relocating to the Bloor and Fieldgate area in Mississauga)

It might be an idea to meet at a college campus as there are many that are becoming Linux User friendly and would be supportive of our cause.

Another would be to alternate between east and west locations.  When numbers warrant it, there could be regular meetings in the east and west areas of the Greater Toronto area with eventually the different major cities in the GTA having their own JUG.
