Briefcase doesn't seem to be able to find people

We have been using LDAP to authenticate our portal users since it's
inception (now 2.5.3). We implemented briefcase relatively easily and
it seems to work as designed.

Now my problem is that users cannot find people with whom to share
their briefcase files. When I search, I can find 'native' users such
as admin and student, but I can't find users created by ldap.

When I look at an individual who was created by LDAP, they are in
Students.

At this point, we have not implemented LDAP groups (as in the
compositeGroupServices.xml file) or PAGS. We'd like to work with one
or the other to make our groups more dynamic but we want to be sure
whatever we do with groups will allow our briefcase users to find each
other.
