Quezon City, Nov. 23, 2000 - Edu Manzano appeared so genuine and personal in the way he attacked his role as the irresponsible husband who batter his wives in "Abandonada" (he has two in the movie, played by Maricel Soriano and Angelu de Leon), so much so, people close to him fear that moviegoers might think he's really like that in real life.
"Truth to tell," Edu said, "I enjoy portraying roles which is the exact opposite of what I am in real life. Hindi sa pagbubuhat ng bangko, mabait ako sa tunay na buhay. Those who have known me long enough can attest to this."
Edu said he fell in love with the character assigned him in "Abandonada" right after it was presented to him by Viva Films. Firstly, because it will reunite him with former wife, Maricel Soriano. Second, it will allow him the chance to work with young actress Angelu de Leon.
"Pero, natural, 'yung character which I am supposed to portray in the movie ang big come on para sa akin to accept the project. Actually hindi ko ma-imagine ang sarili ko na nananakit ng babae. Para sa akin, ang babae, lalo't asawa mo ito, should be loved, protected and nurtured. E, sa 'Abandonada,' I have this ugali na sinasaktan hindi lang ang asawa ko, kung hindi pati anak ko."
Edu has remained friends with his two ex-wives, Vilma Santos (whom he divorced and is now Mrs. Ralph Recto) and Maricel (who is still Mrs. Manzano, to date, since their marriage has yet to be annulled). He can turn to them anytime he needs their help or advice. And vice versa.
He is an ideal father to his three children. Lucky, his 20-year-old son by Lipa City Mayor Vilma Santos-Recto, constantly comes to him for advice and guidance. They take to each other as buddies. The other two are still very young.
When I asked Edu why he is drawn to bad guy roles (he is almost always a kontrabida, too, in the action movies he appears in), he answered: "As an actor, you need to be challenged. And what better way is there to challenge you as a performer kung hindi 'yung role na hindi mo ma-imagine na puwedeng mangyari sa iyo sa tunay na buhay. Ang feeling ko kasi, when you are acting, you have to have the liberty to suspend reality. Iyon nga lang, I also want the role assigned to me to be, in a way, real. 'Yung tipong alam mong may tao ngang ganito na nag-e-exist." (ETHEL RAMOS, MALAYA)
