Agana, Guam, Oct. 6, 1999 - Actress Anjanette Abayari has been released from
the Guam Women's Detention Facility and will remain under house arrest while
she is being tried for alleged possession of prohibited substances. Her
boyfriend, athlete David Bunevacz, posted $10,000 for her bail. Bunevacz
arrived Monday night and appeared in court yesterday morning.
The 29-year-old Filipino-American actress was arrested at the A.B. Won Par
Guam
International Airport last Saturday, charged for possessing a plastic pipe or
tooter with traces of shabu inside her make-up kit. She had pleaded not guilty
to the charge.
Guam Superior Court Judge Alberto Lamorena III reportedly agreed to lower
Abayari's bail from $50,000 after the actress' lawyer, Michael Philips,
convinced him that she would never escape from US territory.
A Guam national, Jenny Ilao, would act as third-party custodian for Abayari,
and serve as "guarantor" for the actress while she is out of prison. Ilao, a
member of a Filipino-American family in Latte Heights, Dededo Village,
Northern
Guam, is a personal friend of Bunevacz. She earlier tried to post bail for
Abayari but the judge refused to accept payment through her American Express
credit card.
The Judge ordered Ilao responsible in ensuring that Abayari appears at all
court hearings. Ilao will also answer for the actress in the event that she
escapes. As custodian, she should ensure that the actress stays away from
alcohol and drugs submits to random drug tests.
Ilao will also have to regularly report to the judge on Abayari's whereabouts.
Although out of jail, the actress is only allowed to leave Ilao's house for
the
following reasons: to report to the probation office, meet with her lawyer,
attend court hearings or see the doctor.
In all cases, she will have to be accompanied by Ilao. She is also strongly
prohibited from going to places where alcohol or drugs are served and she must
not be seen in any of Guam's points of entry or exit.
According to Ilao, Abayari appeared relieved as she walked past the gates of
Guam's Women Detention Facility. She said the actress insisted on her
innocence, claiming that the plastic pipe in her make-up kit belonged to her
sister who was reportedly undergoing rehabilitation.
Abayari is the second actress from the Philippines to be jailed in Guam for
drugs. Earlier, actress Alma Concepcion was also detained in the US colony
after she several grams of shabu were found in her possession.
Both actresses are former Bb. Pilipinas titleholders.
The Philippine government initially refused to extend help to Abayari because
she is an American citizen, but consul to Guam Benhur Ong is closely
monitoring
her case.
Ong would have to get clearance from the judge before Philippine consulate
authorities can speak with the actress.
