Quezon City, Oct. 14, 2000 - Joel Lamangan has a new movie in the can: Viva's "Abandonada," with Maricel Soriano in the title role. It's his first time to work with Maricel.
The plot came from Joel. Maricel plays a nurse who's back in the Philippines after working in Canada for three years. It's a bitter homecoming as Maricel finds out she's been abandoned by her husband (Edu Manzano), who married a rich and much younger girl (Angelu de Leon). Edu took with him their four-year-old son. He has a new baby by Angelu.
To get near her son, Maricel works as a domestic helper in Edu and Angelu's mansion. It took time before Angelu discovers that Maricel is Edu's first wife and that the boy she has learned to love is the maid's son. Life with Edu is not exactly heaven for Angelu as he has a violent streak.
In the end, the two wives get back at their common husband. Also in the cast of "Abandonada" are Jay Manalo and Ynez Veneracion. Jay reportedly reports to the set in different luxury cars and a Harley motorcycle. The actor explains he's into selling cars in between classes at San Sebastian.
"Abandonada" is Angelu de Leon's third Viva movie with "direk" Joel Lamangan, after last year's "Bulaklak ng Maynila," which me-rited her the Metro Manila filmfest best supporting actress award. Their first was shot years back, when Angelu was in her early teens.
"I love working with 'direk' Joel, who played an important part in my career. 'Bulaklak' was my comeback after giving birth to Nicole. It was a make-or-break situation. And 'direk' was a big, big factor in the film's success," Angelu said.
Angelu was thrilled to hear that in New York's Walter Reade theater (Lincoln Center), where "Bulaklak" was shown along with other Filipino films, she merited rave words from the critics. Too think that it also starred Elizabeth Oropesa, who scored a grandslam in the movie, and drama king Christopher de Leon. (Ronald Constantino, Bulletin Group)
