MANILA, Jan. 19 (PNA) - - President Ramos today approved the release
of P5.5 million to two Ilocos Sur municipalities for the restoration and
repair of infrastructure facilities which were damaged by typhoon
"Gloring"in 1996.

Of the total amount, P3 million will be used for the repair and
restoration of the Gongogong bridge in Sigay town, while the balance of
P2.5 million will go to Sta. Maria for the rehabilitation of local
infrastructure structures also damaged by Gloring.

The Chief Executive approved the fund releases upon the
recommendation of National Defense Secretary Fortunato Abat, who also
chairs the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC).

In his recommendation, Abat informed the President that the fifth
class town of Sta Maria cannot afford to implement the projects without
the support of the national government.

"The requested amount is P13.8 million but NDCC is only P2.5 million
for the repair of river control and seawall which are considered as
disaster prevention measures,"Abat said.

Abat also said that the movement of people and farm goods in the area
has been adversely affected as a result of the damage to the Gongogong
bridge.

The NDCC chief pointed out that Sigay, a sixth class municipality,
has already allocated P1 million but the amount is not enough to
complete the project.

Abat added that the Ilocos Sur provincial government is also
allocating P1 million for the Gongogong bridge project. (PNA) JE/OPS/
