BAGUIO CITY, Feb. 23 (PNA) - - There were sidewalk cafes and artists
as well as cultural groups that performed on the streets and parks.
Some of the floats that participated include, UP College, Baguio;
Smart Communications, Loakan Elementary Schools, Bank of Philippine
Islands, Provincial government of La Union, Highland Blooms.
Among the highlights of the festival were exhibits and contest.
A landscaping of the festival were exhibits and contest.
A landscaping contest which draw raves last year, was the main
feature of the Garden show.
Participants were assigned an area to decorate and beautify using
only potted flowers and plants, including movable garden decorations.
A garden show was set up to promote the indigenous arts, crafts, and
flowers of the Cordilleras. Booths were leased to florists, supplies and
others during the festival.
A flower arrangement contest was also held. It was an on-the-spot
activity for onlookers to view specific techniques in creating
award-winning arrangements.
Part of the festival was the Barangay Beautification contest wherein
barangays are again encouraged to landscape their areas in line with
the city's continuing efforts to beautify and clean the city.
Other features of the BFF includes the Market Encounter, a garden
trade show featuring flowers grown by local supplies, flower suppliers
and equipment, landscaping; food festival; school based landscaping;
invitational golf tournament; Pony Boy's day, which is a day for horses
on parade, horse riding skills, among others.
The first BFF was held on Feb. 9, 1996 with the dream of making it a
major activity in the tourism calendar of the country.
In order to attain a maximum output, the festival was shaped with the
following objectives:
-- To position Baguio as a premier tourist destination of flowers in
the Philippines, generating higher tourist arrivals.
-- To become a tradition of the Baguio community and an annual event
that tourists mark on their calendars.
-- To highlight the best of what Baguio community can offer such as
its variety of flowers which will become an added attraction aside from
its usual fare.
-- To generate a venue for the local flower market of Baguio City to
link with other markets, producers and manufacturers.
-- To enhance Baguio's reputation as the cleanest and contribute to
its re greening campaign through concreted efforts of the community.
