Manila, August 5, 1999 - The Cultural Center of the Philippines announced
last night that National Artist for Dance Lucrecia Reyes Urtula died
yesterday. She was 74.
Known to friends as "Inday," Urtula spent a lifetime in the research and
study of indigenous dances and traditions. Her choreography projected the
Bayanihan Dance Company to world fame.
She was conferred The National Artist for Dance Award in 1988.
Among her other awards were: 1990 Asean Tourism Association Award (for best
Asean preservation effort); 1982 Tandang Sora Award for the Arts; City of
Manila Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan Award; International Women's Year
Award; 1963 Republic Cultural Heritage Award (for researching folk dance).
Her body lies in state at the St. Alphonsus Mary de Liguori Chapel in
Magallanes Village, Makati City.
The schedule of necrological rites and other interment details will be
announced in the next few days.
