Manila, Oct. 20, 1999 President Estrada said sexy actress Rosanna Roces
should
be reprimanded for wearing two very revealing costumes at the Star Awards
Night, because her attire could help destroy the reputation of other
members of
the movie industry and influence the youth.
''That's . . . not a good sign for our youth especially when movie people are
idolized by the youth,'' the President told Malacanang reporters, speaking in
Filipino and English. “She should be reprimanded. You know, hindi naman
maganda
ang reputation ng ating mga artista kung ganoon.”
During Sunday night's Channel 13 telecast of Star Awards for TV, which Roces
co-hosted with actor Aga Muhlach she had two costume changes. One gown exposed
her left breast which was barely covered by tattoo-like body paint. The second
was a black catsuit with a huge shiny cross on the chest. The back was sheer
tulle that completely showed her G-stringed buttocks.
IBC 13, which aired the show, on Monday received a memo from the Movies and
Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) requesting for a complete
tape of the program.
The President yesterday said he believed Rosanna’s attention-catching act was
meant to be a career booster.
“Mukhang nawawala na siya sa limelight kaya gumagawa na naman ng gimmick. Yun
lang ang aking opinion, dahil nanggaling din ako sa movies. Pero hindi niya
dapat gawin iyon. Maraming mga paraan para mabalik sa limelight. (She seems to
have been out of the limelight so she's resorting to gimmicks. That is my
(opinion) . . . I also came from the movies. But there are many ways of
returning to the limelight),'' Estrada said.
In various TV and radio interviews yesterday. Rosanna was defending her
decision to wear the revealing outfits. She called the MTRCB a “bunch of
hypocrites” for spending time on the controversy over her clothes instead of
fixing the MTRCB’s own problems.
“Bago nila linisin ang iba, ang bakuran muna nila ang ayusin,” the feisty
actress said.
At the House of Representatives, the pro-women party-list group Abanse! Pinay
cautioned Roces from making more bold public displays of her body. Abanse
Rep.
Patricia Sarenas said her group was worried that such acts could undermine
Roces' image as ''spokesperson and model for women's reproductive health.''
Roces had appeared in TV ads promoting reproductive health and a woman’s
freedom to decide, which Abanse strongly advocates.
Sarenas acknowledged that the movie star ''is very effective in sending
messages because she shocks the senses,'' but added that Roces ''should
recognize that she's treading on dangerous ground.''
