Manila, Feb. 4, 1999 - Today is the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the
Philippine-American War. To commemorate its centenary, the Department of
Tourism, the National Historical Institute and the city government of
Manila will join together in laying a marker at the site of the outbreak of
the Philippine-American War at the corner of Sosiego and Silencio streets in
Old Santa Mesa, Manila.
This spot, according to historian Dr. Benito Legarda Jr., formed the
boundary of the third Military Zone of the Filipino forces 100 years ago,
when both American and Filipinos forces occupied Manila. At 9 p.m. Saturday,
February 4, 1899, a US Army Patrol attacked a Filipino patrol. It was an
act of aggression on the newly constituted First Philippine Republic, and
the incident led to the outbreak of the Philippine-American War.
Some historians maintain that the first shot was fired at the bridge of San
Juan del Monte, where a historical marker now stands. However, the first
battle in defense of the first Philippine Republic covered a large area of
Manila, which included what is now known as old Santa Mesa and San Juan.
Tourism Secretary Gemma Cruz Araneta said: "What is important is for the
nation to honor and remember the heroic Filipino men and women who fought in
defense of the young Republic, which was also Asia's first democratic
republic. The celebration of our National Centennial will not be complete
if we do not include the defense of the first Philippine Republic during the
Philippine-American War."
The marker laying and flower-laying ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Top
officials of the city and national governments, led by Manila Mayor Lito
Atienza and Tourism Secretary Araneta, will lead the commemoration of the
event, which will also be attended by business and civic leaders, as well as
descendants of Filipino heroes who fought both the Spanish and the American
colonizers.
