Manila, Jan. 30, 1999 - The Bulletin's Nestor Cuartero has just broken the
news in print: Kris Aquino and Philip Salvador have gone their separate
ways. According to Cuartero, Kris packed up her belongings, picked up their
son, Joshua, and moved out of the Wack Wack condo she and Philip moved into
just a few months ago.
So is this the end of the 5-year romance that landed in international news
because of former President Cory Aquino's disapproval of her daughter Kris'
illicit affair with a much older, much married notorious ladies' man?
Cuartero writes that the couple had indeed been sailing on rough waters for
quite some time now, with " constant quarrels said to be financial in
nature, although other incompatibilities were also cited."
Philip has yet to publicly open up on the subject. But, Kris, whose nickname
is "Taklesa" for "tactless" recently told friends it wasn't necessary to
inform Philip of her decision to star in a movie titled 'Ikalawang Asawa'.
Others say Kris' decision to leave Philip is the best birthday gift she ever
gave her mother, former president Corazon Aquino, who has stood her ground
against the relationship. Cory marked another milestone last Jan. 25.
Another person who is expected to welcome the news is Tarlac Congressman
Benigno Aquino III, the older brother of Kris, who has been very vocal about
his dislike of Philip.
Cuartero writes that Kris sacrificed so much for Philip, who gave up his
first family for Kris.
Others would say that the process of giving up his family is not yet a done
deal, since Philip's legal wife has consistently refused to consent to an
annulment or legal separation.
Kris was conspicuously absent from the wake and funeral of her favorite
grandmother, Dona Aurora Aquino, who she was very close to. At the time of
Dona Aurora's death, Kris, Joshua and Philip were in the United States for a
Christmas vacation. A lot of fans and relatives of Kris were disappointed
when Kris did not cut short her US holiday with Philip to attend her
grandmother's funeral.
PHNO has been trying to contact Ms. Deedee Siytangco, spokesman of President
Cory Aquino, to get the former President's reaction or confirmation of
Cuartero's report on her youngest daughter.
Mrs. Aquino has consistently said that Kris and Joshua are welcome in her
home, but Philip will never be let in the door. Kris is reportedly staying
with her son Joshua in a rented condo. There is no word yet on whether she
will move back in with Mama.
