Off Road Ride and Camp Out at Sam Houston National Forest - Saturday 3/14 - 3/15/09

TORCH is planning a camp & ride weekend at Sam Houston National
Forest, Saturday March 14 and Sunday March 15 and all are invited to
join us for a weekend of camping, riding and fellowship. The forest
offers seemingly countless miles of trails, caters to riders of all
levels and accommodates both bikes and ATV’s.

We'll be camping at Kelly's Pond Recreation Area and Multi-use
Trailhead, west of New Waverly. This site offers free camping with
convenient access to the west-side multi-use trails and has a restroom
available. Picnic tables and well shaded campsites with lantern post
and grills are available.

Schedule:
Ride all day Saturday (3/14)
Fellowship and Camp Saturday night
Ride Sunday (3/15)

*Some will arrive Friday and camp Friday night to get an early start
on Saturday, since the trails are 3 hours from Austin, all are welcome
and encouraged to do the same to do the same.

Potluck:
Bring a dish to share for breakfast, lunch or dinner, portable grills
are welcome and encouraged.

Description: Approximately 85 miles of trail open to motorized
vehicles less than 50” in width. Maps are available at the office in
New Waverly, or online:

Directions:

From west (I-35):
Take 290 east to Brenham, then take Hwy 105 to Navasota, then Hwy 90
to Anderson. Turn right on Hwy 149 at Anderson. At approximately 18
miles, turn east (left) onto FM 1375 and follow for 4.6 miles, then
turn south on Stubblefield Lake Rd (or Forest Road 204). At
approximately .7 mile turn right on Kelly's Pond Rd (or Forest Road
271) to the camping area and trail head.

From east (I-45):
Take Interstate 45 north for 60 miles, exit #102 at New Waverly. Turn
west onto FM 1375 and follow for approximately 10 miles, then turn
south on Stubblefield Lake Rd (or Forest Road 204). At approximately .
7 mile turn right on Kelly's Pond Rd (or Forest Road 271) to the
camping area and trail head.

Trail Use Fee: $5.00 per person per day for riders 16 years of age and
older, or an Annual Multi Use Trail Pass may be purchased at the Sam
Houston District Office. For those that don't have one, a Texas OHV
sticker is required and is available at these locations for $8

Public Land and USFS requirements:

· Display an annual Registration Sticker on all off-road
vehicles, available through Texas Parks and Wildlife (see above).

· (For ATV riders) Take an ATV Safety Rider Course and carry
your certificate (call 1-800-887-2887 for information).

· Wear a D.O.T. approved helmet and eye protection.

· Vehicles must have a USFS approved spark arrestor.

· Operators under 14 years of age must be under direct
supervision of parent or guardian.

sale. All proceeds go to TORCH events.

Clayton,

As I've previously mentioned, IMO this is a prime reason why we
shouldn't be so quick to totally abandon Google Groups. I haven't had
time to browse the forums (& have prob lost touch with everything
that's going on as a result), but email is pushed to me almost
immediately on my phone. Keeping up with TORCH activities shouldn't
necessitate having to regularly monitor another forum IMO. It would
have been even more helpful had it been a last minute cancellation.

The Google Group was far more popular than our TON sub-forum, FWIW...

We're heading out early tomorrow (Friday) morning. See ya'll at
Kelly's Pond Camp area.

Just a reminder, make sure you have an OHV sticker and a spark
arrestor.
