I went w/GF on my ATV's, a couple weeks ago.
Getting in past the gate is easy during daylight hours, but a visit to the
sportsman center is required to fill out the paperwork. The place is kinda
small; we covered the entire area in 2-3 hours. Many tank trails, some water
features(a small stream runs through it), and some small hills. Nothing very
technical but great for novice riders, and fun considering the price is
right and it is fairly close. I was instructing my GF for the first time,
and she was able to do anything I did.
One thing I did find out that surprised me, is that Ft. Hood allows hunting,
fishing, a rifle range, and camping in addition to the off-road area. As of
late, the base has been more open to civilians participating in ceremonies
and recreation. As a Patriot Guard Rider on 2 wheels, I have also been on
base for a base-wide cycle training program, ride and concert all put on by
the base. Additionally, we (PGR) have been invited to participate in the
return of a group of G.I.'s coming home from Iraq.
My personal take is the area is small but useful, and if we use it and treat
the land properly, it is feasible they will open up more lands to us, as
there is lots of open space adjacent to the current area. If increased in
size, this would be a fantastic place to ride.
