I was considering setting up a VPN server for Torc so that I could view content outside my home.  I understand that the iOS client won't talk with OpenVPN.  Does anyone have a VPN setup that works and what server are you using?  I'm on Fedora 16 x86_64.

Thanks,

George

Hi George,

I followed this guide to set up my VPN:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1645473

Note that if you're using Ubuntu you'll want to be on 12.04 as any
earlier version of IPSec has a nasty bug when an iOS device connects
that causes it to work perfectly for exactly one session, then never
respond again. This is obviously a bad thing ;)

George,
I had the same question. Since you're on Fedora, I figure I would
share this hack I ran across for pptpd:
http://cnedelcu.blogspot.com/2011/10/pptp-server-fix-for-ios-problems.html

I haven't tried it - since I have an Ubuntu 12.04 backend, I figure
I'll give Robert's method a try first-

Steve & Robert:

Thanks.  I'll take a look and see if I can't get it working this weekend.

I briefly considered trying this one before I got VPN working properly:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/issh-ssh-vnc-console/id287765826?mt=8

I didn't end up trying it, though. It seems like it would work for
our purposes but I can't confirm that.

Does enabling IPSec for host-to-host connectivity interfere with other means for connecting to the host, such as SSH?

Larry:

I haven't had a problem with SSH.  I will say that even with my FiOS service, streaming outside of the home is an "iffy" proposition.  It works well within the house, but the variables once on the public Internet mean that it's a roll of the dice as to whether or not it will work.
