He Recompenses
"If you will say, 'Surely we did not know this!' But the One Who
resides in hearts, He understands; and the Protector of your soul,
He knows; and He recompenses a man according to his deeds."
(Proverbs 24:12)
"And He recompenses a man according to his deeds": This means that a
person is held as responsible for passive inaction as for active
sinning. The verse says that a person may be reluctant to sacrifice
his time and money in order to help a stranger, but if he does it,
Hashem rewards a man according to his deeds, in unimaginable ways
(see Isaiah 64:3). The verse states that Hashem perceives the heart
and pays according to his deeds. If he tries but is unsuccessful,
Hashem rewards him as if he succeeded (Me'am Loez, citing Mussar
Av).
