Question: Why do all FreeNets seem
to choose FreePort Software which is
the copyrighted product of case Western
Reserve University?
Answer: Maybe the fact that Cleveland
(where Case Western U. is located) is
the site of the first FreeNet and the
organization that assists FreeNets? Or
that Cleveland FreeNet et al exist due
to the good graces of CWRU? Hmmm....
When I sat in on a few of the founding
meetings of Toronto FreeNet I was struck
by the extreme lack of choice the alleged
hardware/software committee offered as
recomended system software. FreePort
seemed the only choice they considered
seriously.
"Why?" was always my question - and
it remains a question unanswered, most
especially the UNIX boys out there. All
they can do is crow "FreeNet is good!
FreeNet is Great!" with never a word
about possible improvements of their
rather stilted visions and their
hideous FreePort choice.
My conclusion after several months
using FreePort: the software is genuine
shit. While Toronto has configured it's
service better than Ottawa FreeNet's
hellish, shackled mess, FreePort is
impossiblely stupid, horrendously
difficult to figure out and worst of
all - apparently flakey and unreliable.
Even in the dreadfully complex world
of UNIX command line Internet servers
FreePort is the worst, most poorly
concieved software perhaps on the face
of this planet.
Yet, time after time, FreeNet's choose
this garbage as their operating system,
perhaps providing CWRU some much needed
revenue? Seems like all that public money
spent on equipment and all that time
and FreeNet hype are wasted by system
software that basically is so difficult
to use I'm sure it gives even the hardest
headed UNIX devotee Mensa sized headaches.
It certainly sends me spinning every
time I use it... and I am EXTREMELY
average technically speaking.
Time to dump FreePort forever. While
we may deprive Case Western University
of a few royalty bucks for the sake of
access to informations and knowledge
FreePort has to go - NOW.

Ok, please post the name of the software
that is better than FreePort. You seem to
have omitted this name in your post. Or
are you working on such software and is this
an announcement it's ready real soon now ?

To junk one's computer the day you install a
new one, ok. To junk it just because you are
not satisfied fully, without having anything
else is just foolish. What would those systems
run ? Vaporware ?

It's worth noting that when you're talking about "cheaper",
since most FreeNets I'm aware of are not-for-profit, cheaper
is critical to the existence of the FreeNet in the first place.

Oh, come on. Surely you're aware that the rich white male sysadmins in
Cleveland are just part of the global conspiracy to oppress the
homeless in Parkdale. Don't try to cover their complicity, David.

Close: Maybe the fact that CWRU took the time and effort to *develop* the
FreePort freenet software, and other places simply think it's cheaper to
get the finished product from CWRU than it is to invest the time and effort
on their own to write their own versions?

Personally,on my few attempts to use the Freenet,I will add the words
ugly, slow, prone to freeze for no apparent reason, and just completely
user-shit.I coudnt believe anything could be so pathetic. There again,I am
not used to stone-age UNIX stuff from the Seventies or fifties or
whatever.

Lynx. Check out the Chebucto Freenet or the Blue Skies Freenet.
We run an ISP and seem to get by just fine with a simple menu
system written in PERL. There are about 5 menu screens on it.
The real action happens in PINE, TIN (yechh!), TRN or LYNX.
Don't ask me for a copy of my hacked menu system. I said it was
SIMPLE so you should be able to spend a few hours and do as good or
better than me.

Mankind has been constructed the same for the past 4 million years (depending
on your source of buried bones), and I believe it is time we replaced Mankind
with Windows95! Does anyone have the source code?

Mark, look at it this way, if windows 95 is the present, the UNIX is system of the year 2010.
Bob, UNIX is WELL ahead then WindowsAnything is.
