Hey Everyone,

Mount Baker Rowing Center just opened up their summer youth novice crew sign ups. For any kid who might want to experiment with being on the water this summer for a short 6 week session--Tues, Thurs, and Saturday (varying times). We signed Ryan up for the 1-3 slot. Would love to have company!!

Great to see everyone at the picnic!!

A Quick Note
Hello to the Mount Baker Rowing and Sailing Community-

First, this update is coming pretty close on the heels of our last update just 4 days ago, but there are some important developments that need to be shared.

Just under two months ago we officially got the approval from Seattle Parks to reopen programming at Mount Baker, and we've gotten a lot done in that time. Under normal circumstances, we would have a 12 month lead time for program planning, budgeting, registration entry, quality assurance, staffing, etc. We've had to do all of that within 6 weeks while also adapting operations to meet COVID guidelines. I've made a few mistakes and poor predictions, but I have to say that overall I'm proud of the job we've done and the support we've gotten from all of you.

Given the unprecedented nature of the current situation, we're trying our best to be flexible and pivot to other options as the need arises, but we operate in an organization that does not change directions quickly. Furthermore, Seattle Parks is still stretched very thin and simply doesn't have the resources to handle many of the last-minute changes we're currently requesting.

All this is to say that we are doing our best to try and meet the community needs, but we're kind of making this up as we go along. We appreciate your patience as we work through this strange, strange time.

Thanks, and Go Baker!
Jason
Adult Learn to Row and Novice Rowing
Last week we discussed the current enrollment situation for Summer Programs, and what that might mean for certain classes. With several rowing courses destined for cancellation, we've decided to convert those to Learn to Row and Youth Novice Rowing courses. For now, we are forced to limit them to just 15 participants to accommodate our COVID guidelines of single or double sculls.

Currently those courses are still titled "Experienced" but we are trying to get those changed within the next day or so. For now, we've linked directly to those courses below to allow registrants to sign up immediately.

For those curious about Adult Learn to Sail and Learn to Windsurf opportunities, we are still very short on sailing instructors and simply don't yet have the staffing to support those courses. We will offer those courses when the staffing allows.

Online registration for these courses ends on Friday, June 18 at noon, but registration over the phone is still possible after June 18. We will accept new participants into these courses up to 1 week after the course begins, thereafter we cannot accept new participants.
Rainier Beach Pool Float Test
Participants who had a valid float test on March 13, 2020 will have that float test extended to the end of 2021. This should accommodate most returning participants.

Those who are new to our programs or whose float test expired prior to March 13, 2020 will be able to conduct their float test at a Seattle Parks and Recreation pool. For this purpose, we have set aside two pool sessions at Rainier Beach Pool:
  • Date: Friday, June 18
  • Times: 6:45 & 7:15
  • Limited to 12 participants each
  • Cost: Free!
We will have direct links to sign up in a future update.

For anyone who cannot make the time at Rainier Beach, two pools (Colman and Mounger) will open on June 19, and swim beaches will open on June 26. Beaches will be able to administer float tests on a drop in basis for free during lifeguarded hours (usually between noon and 7:00 pm). Contact the office at mount...@seattle.gov for more info

For those who are unsure of your float test status, you can view your float test in your ActiveNet account. If you are still unsure, you can email us at mount...@seattle.gov. Bear in mind we are still very lean in the office so it may take us some time to get back to you.

Links to float test sessions are below.

These courses are now live for registration.
Electronic Forms
As we mentioned above, electronic forms are now live and we've processed several hundred already. Direct links are below.

Please note: Once you submit a form, it goes directly to our office staff, but may not be immediately updated into iCrew. We are doing our best to update them as soon as we get them, but please be patient if it takes a bit of time. We are committed to updating paperwork within a business day and are usually able to do so within an hour if it's during business hours.
COVID Guidelines and FAQ
We've put together some information giving an overview of our current guidelines and a FAQ. We will be updating this page as information changes over the next several months. For any questions not listed on our COVID guidelines page please contact us at mount...@seattle.gov.
