we have a web-talk with Siwei Tian  about the Cavway X1.

My hesitation is that the Caveway X1 has no track record.  It seems like Siwei Tian has only made a very limited number of hand-made prototypes, without a single production model (yet). 

he said about 6 prototypes.

for comparison heeb made about the same number of pre-release distox2 before production.

i do not know the numbers for bric and sap.

 

Siewi Tian compared the Caveway X1 to the DistoX2.  The better comparison, in my opinion, is between the Caveway X1 and the Bric-5. 

why didn't you ask that?

After all, those are the only two real choices that purchasers have.

i consider sap6 another option.

xble is also an option: leica x310 can still be found on the used market (although this is getting harder and harder)

  The DistoX2 is familiar, but anyone looking for a new survey instrument has no practical option for a DistoX2 any longer.

at the beginning i showed a slide with the timeline of what i consider the most used cave surveying devices.

i did not put the numbers for each device.

my estimate is there are eight times more distox than bric.

worldwide, the distox2 is still the golden standard.

why hasn't the bric replaced the distox ?

 

Finally, you seemed to be selling the Caveway X1 very hard.  I assume you don’t have a financial interest in its success, but I don’t know that for a fact, and I missed the first few minutes of the presentation.

i do not have any financial interest.

tian gave me the cavway prototype for free.

i also got a bric4 for free by fausnight (i paid only custom duties, which was almost like buying a distox board).

heeb did not get any richer by making the distox, and i think tian will not get rich by selling the cavway.

the market is too small.

 

What is your opinion about the Caveway X1 versus the Bric-5?

i do not have a bric-5, and the cavway has improved a lot since the first prototype i have been testing.

i am not in a position to make a sound comparison between the two.

i said that the bric has not replaced the distox2.

we will see if the cavway will set a new standard or it will be just another cave surveying device.
