My friends and I completed a long survey yesterday, about 150 stations. Sometimes, my skinner partner will go down a narrow passage solo and "stacks" shots and stations in the Disto memory. This will be a branch off the main line, so I first select the tie in station (long press, green station name). I then download the data. What happens is the station for the splays and the shots go out of sync. Effectively, the splays and shots naming begin from different sources and continue increment independently for the whole download.

In addition, the selected tie in station name is only applied to the first set of sprays and not the shot itself.

Hi Garry,
If you can add some screenshots it would make it easier to see/debug what's happening.

I have also used the technique of storing lots of shots in the DistoX, it's great (so long as you don't stuff up the groupings).  For really nasty cave (and/or mutinous caving buddies) I also video and narrate to GoPro instead of sketching.  I wasn't aware of the long-press/green-station-name to add a branch, that's really useful.

What I've been doing instead might be useful for you as a workaround.  Before reading the branch shots out of the DistoX, I add a very short dummy shot in TopoDroid so that the latest station is named as I would like the branch stations, and the auto-increment will go from there.
Ie. MAIN_STN_37, BRANCH_STN_0, 0.1m, 0deg, 0deg

When the branch is done, I do another dummy shot to return to the previous station.  The dummy shots are a bit messy, but can be useful to show on the plot that there is a junction (I also use them as shorthand for a marked station).

Regards,
Stephen

Here isn't exactly case since the jump doesn't have any splays. However see the odd/even counting.

Hi Garry,

I can't reproduce the error.
To find the error, you would need:
- Station policy settings
- Repeated leg shot data

Balázs.

Station policy is default. Unfortunately, once downloaded from the DistoX, the setup condition is gone. Is there a way to load data TO a DistoX?

I am finding unexpected results with automatic station naming too, maybe the same as Garry's issue.  It is nothing unworkable if understood, but unexpected behavior I cant find explanation for in the help file.

I am using Topodroid version 6.1.9-31 and activity level "tester" and stations policy "splays, forward leg".   Device is Samsung Note9, Android version 10.

The unexpected results are:

1

The station names generated by TopoDroid are all odd numbers after the first; I get station 0,1,3,5... (for this example I will stop the survey of the main line here)  This is no problem if this is always expected but recently trying to do a survey with 2 teams, the other survey team's phone did not skip the even station numbers from the start and it made station naming very confusing.

issue: it was unexpected to get only odd numbered stations.

2

In the above example, if I then select station 1 (station number 1 goes green) in the shot data window to show my intention to survey a branch off station 1; topodroid only automatically makes the splays go from station 1, the next triple shot to the next station on the branch away from station 1 automatically appears as a leg from station 5 to 7.  I can manually correct the leg from 5-> 7 to 1->7 to fix this.  After that, everything automatically works as expected without needing to further manually select/edit the active station.

issue: leg shot not correctly referenced to active station after active station is changed/manually selected.  (This seems to be the issue Garry raised?)

3

If I survey yet another branch of the cave leading off station 1 by again selecting station 1 as the active station (again, the station number goes green in the shot data window) Topodroid automatically assigns splays and leg shots correctly but now it only gives even numbered station names. The automatic station numbers are 1->12, 12->14...   Thereafter, any branch from any station seems to give all even numbered stations.  Splays and stations are assigned correctly.

issue: unexpected even numbered stations when surveying second or third or fourth branches off the mainline.  The issue in point #2 above is no longer present.

these issues have been reported already a few times, but i cannot reproduce any.

@brett

if you can reproduce these issues consistently
please take a logcat with v.  6.1.30 {or whichever is the last} and send it to me.
it will be long: limit yourself to only a few legs and only a couple of splays each leg.

one issue at a time.

logcat can be taken with adb and android in dev-mode.
filter the logcat statements on the string "topodroid-X", otherwise it will be very loooong.

thx, marco

Hi Marco, I have never used adb before, I dont mind giving it a go but the issue described where TopoDroid defaults to only odd numbered station names does not happen with only a couple of splays each leg.  It happens sometimes with just 4 splays.  It can be made to happen all the time with lots of splays.  Maybe some surveyors are more restrained but there is the tendency with electronic surveying and some people to fire off many splay shots like a lidar scanner.

Here is a reproducible method to get the odd numbered station issue that works for me:

create a new survey and press the open button

take 3 identical shots on DistoX and press download button (Station 0-1 always works fine, shot data list will show 0-1)

take at least 5 splay shots, all different directions.  I suggest 12 to be sure.  Download the splays, lots of random splay data is seen in the shot list.

Take 3 identical shots and download: the shot list will show station 1-3, not 1-2.

From here, take 3 identical shots to get new stations with no splays at all.  All stations will be odd numbered thereafter. (unless creating a branch changes the behavior as previously described)

brett,

me too, i can not reproduce the error as you described.

if you try v. 6.1.30 that should "detect" an increment skip and, from that point on, send the logs to the file
/sdcard/android/data/com.topodroid.tdx/files/log.txt

i appreciate if you send me pm the file together with screenshots of the shot listings, and the detailed sequence of actions (on distox and on the app)

set the shot listing to display also the id's

thx, marco

Brett's sequence is easy to reproduce the odd station naming. Not exactly the same as the jump station problem, but probably related.

Garry, Brett !

Yes, you have both encountered a very annoying bug. This error renders the program unusable. Maybe many people still suffer with this error, it should be corrected for their benefit as well.
Unfortunately, it cannot be fixed at all until Marco finds the wrong command in the program.
For this, you need the log file or the result of the adb program.
Let's start by having both of you install version 6.1.30 and reproduce the error.
The next step is to connect your phone to your desktop computer.
After allowing access to the files, the
This PC\ -my phone- \Internal storage\Android\data\com.topodroid.TDX\files
log.txt should be copied from the folder.
This should be sent to Marco.
If you get stuck at any step, I'm happy to help.

Balázs.

I've installed 31-33 on my phone, S20, Android v12. I tried twice to reproduce the previously mentioned sequence and no error occurred. To be sure, I went back to the tablet, v21-31, and reproduced the error sequence for a second time. This will be difficult.

could you reproduce the error with v. 6.1.21-31 (or 6.1.29-31 on download) on the phone S20 ?

To be sure, I went back to the tablet, v21-31, and reproduced the error sequence for a second time.

could you try 6 1.31-33 on the tablet S8 ?

This will be difficult.

I'll be installing 31-33 on the S8 tab later today and planning a challenging survey for tomorrow. Of course, with data backed up first and doing a test run around the house before going out to a cave.

We used version 31-33 extensively yesterday, setting some 235 stations over half a mile of cave. Sadly, just about 10 feet per shot, did I say this cave was very crawly.

We tried, not by design, various jump stations, splay to shot promotions and shot stacking. Everything worked as expected. Attached is a view of the survey, done over two days.

thank you for the updates.

there is no substantial difference between v. 6.1.21 and v. 6.1.31 in the classes that handle the (default) station name assignment.
the differences amount to (1) some logs and (2) a test to branch off to a special case, normally skipped.

the conclusion i draw is that the station name assignment problem is due to errors in the Android runtime converting java bytecode/dex to native.
