Hi!

I want show you my Distox Calibration tool.
It works very similar to this solution:

Distox is mounted at round handle:

The laser beam axis is in the axis of the handle. First step of using this tool, is adjusting laser axiality. When handle is rotated, laser point must be at one place (visible distance, 2 - 3 m).

When laser beam is adjusted the main frame of calibrator must be mounted upside down at tree - laser beam is not stopped at polycarbonate board.

When main calibration is performed, calibrator is mounted as on the pictures, laser beam stops at polycarbonate board.

I think that the principles of construction and operation do not need to be explained.

All is made with aluminium, brass screws and about 10 mm thickness polycarbonate board.

I I use a lot more calibration measurements than Beat suggests. Basic calibration contains 56 measurments. I use about 200 or more.

"The DistoX can store at most 2000 calibration measurements.
You could take even more if you continuously transfer them to PDA or PC.
The calibration algorithm in PocketTopo is able to process any number of entries."

If there is enough time, I use usually 8 measurments for one DistoX rotation at:

1 x -90°

4 x -60°

8 x -30°
8 x 0°

8 x 30°

4 x 60°

1 x 90°

where classic calibration is 4 measurment for one DistoX rotation at:

1 x -90°

4 x -45°

4 x 0°

4 x 45°

1 x 90°

DistoX mk1 has one big disadvantage. It was necessity of calibration after battery replacement. I threw batteries out of unit:

Szymon,

Thankyou for sharing your experience

i was aware of MacLeod video.
As you said, your calibration rig is similar.

Did you compare the calibration results with 200 data with those of 56 ?
in other words, what is the difference in the accuracy of two surveys made with the two calibrations ?

Sort of remember i saw a similar idea of a french website, years ago.

My feeling is that external batteries
make the device more cumbersome,
although that solves the need of frequent calibrations.

I wish there was a positive future for distoX devices.....
