Vehiclesregistered in Texas are required to pass an annual inspection to ensure compliance with safety standards. While safety inspections are required throughout the state, emissions testing is required of vehicles inspected in 17 Texas counties to comply with federally mandated clean air requirements. Vehicle inspections are performed at Official Vehicle Inspection Stations licensed by DPS.

One major goal of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is keeping all drivers licensed for as long as it is safe to do so, while enhancing highway safety by increasing driver competency. DMV recognizes that the independence and mobility that driving provides are important factors in the quality of life for most Californians.

The drive test for the noncommercial Class C (basic) DL is the same for all drivers regardless of age. An adult driver takes the same type of drive test as a teen driver. However, a driver with a P&M condition may take a different version of the drive test containing additional test elements.

For your safety, ask the examiner to show you their DMV identification (ID) badge before the test begins. Only the examiner, or other DMV authorized personnel, are permitted in the vehicle during your drive test. If you have any questions, ask the examiner before your drive test begins. During the test, the examiner will ask questions and give directions. They will not engage in general conversation.

Possession of a DL means you have met the drive test requirements. However, in everyday driving you will have to deal with many situations you did not encounter on your drive test. The best way to deal with unexpected situations is to always use the same safe driving habits and responsible attitude you demonstrated on your drive test.

Motor vehicle exhaust emissions are a significant source of pollution, including carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons. These pollutants can be harmful to human health and the environment and lead to the formation of ground level ozone (smog). Exhaust emissions from cars and trucks are one of the single greatest sources of air pollution in the Chicago and Metro-East St. Louis areas.

Through the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) test, vehicle emissions inspections in Illinois identify malfunctioning emission control systems that often result in vehicles exceeding federal emission standards. Requiring repairs on such vehicles helps clean the air while improving the vehicle's performance and fuel economy.

Most 1996 and newer gasoline-powered passenger vehicles are subject to emissions inspections after they are four years old (e.g. 2012 vehicles are being inspected in 2016 for the first time). The inspection month coincides with the expiration date of the vehicle license plate. Typically, even model-year vehicles are inspected during even years, and odd model-year vehicles are inspected in odd years.

The road test allows the driver to demonstrate an understanding of safe driving by adhering to the rules of the road. The road test may be taken once the knowledge and vision tests are successfully completed at a driver testing center, and you have practiced supervised driving as outlined below: Practice supervised driving for at least 6 months (Graduated Driver License (GDL) requirement for under 21 years of age) Practice supervised driving for at least 3 months (Graduated Driver License (GDL) requirement for over 21 years of age) Non-GDL practice supervised driving for at least 20 days An appointment is needed to take a road test. You may schedule your road test online at this link. You may also schedule an appointment at a driver testing center. A Safety Specialist (Examiner) will accompany you while driving in an off-road testing area or on a public road course. The test will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Backup cameras and parking sensors that have been installed on a motor vehicle are permitted to be used during a road test.

Appointments are required for driving skills tests and must be scheduled a minimum of 48 hours and maximum of 3 weeks in advance. Make sure to review all requirements prior to scheduling a driving test.

You can view your appointment time in your myBMV account. After you login, go to the driver's license and state ID page and select Schedule Driving Test from the left navigation. Your appointment will display on the bottom half of the page.

Road tests may be cancelled in certain areas of the state due to bad weather. If testing is cancelled, you will receive an email to the email address provided to DMV at the time of your appointment. It will provide instructions for the rescheduling of your driver's license test. If testing is being conducted, you are expected to appear for the scheduled test or you will lose the testing fee.

Your qualified trainer must be present at the DMV office and sign a form attesting that all driver education/practice driving requirements have been fulfilled.

Note for non-U.S. license holders: If you are presenting an out-of-country license in a language other than English, you need to also provide translation by one of our approved translators.

If you fail your road test, you must go online to reschedule within 72 hours after your failed test. Your rescheduled test must be scheduled for at least 2 weeks after the initial test. To retake the test, you will need to pay another $40 testing fee.

The vehicle used for the road test must be mechanically safe and pass an evaluation by your driving instructor. If the vehicle you supply for the road test is a rental vehicle and you do not hold a valid driver's license, you cannot use this vehicle for your road test.

Connecticut law requires that any motor vehicle registration that has not been canceled must have liability insurance. Limits of liability as required by law are as follows (effective January 1, 2018) include:

The DMV administers three tests for Driver Licensing: a vision test, a knowledge test and a road test. All tests are done by appointment only. Vision and knowledge tests must be successfully completed prior to scheduling a road test. Road test availability varies between driver licensing locations. A road test may be given on the same day as a knowledge test if same-day appointments are available. If the schedule does not permit same day road testing, the applicant will be given an appointment for a different day. To schedule the initial knowledge or road test, please visit our Appointments and Services page to schedule an appointment.

The vision test will measure how clearly you see. You will be asked to look into an eye machine and read a series of letters or numbers. To pass, you must be able to read the 20/40 vision line with both eyes. If you wear glasses or contact lenses to pass the vision test, you are required to wear them at all times while driving. If you fail the vision test, you will have to visit an eye doctor to certify that you are visually capable of operating a motor vehicle.

The NH DMV uses a computer-based, automated touch screen testing system to administer all knowledge tests. The test is administered on a touch screen monitor and no special knowledge of computers is required. Every knowledge test has a time limit based upon the number of questions. If you exceed the time limit or miss too many questions, the test will automatically terminate; you may request an appointment to retest no sooner than ten days from the current date.

All road test vehicles must be fully registered and in safe operating condition. If the road test vehicle is required to have an inspection sticker, it must be up to date. You must have a properly licensed driver to drive the test vehicle for you to and from the testing site. That person should remain at the test site until the road test has been completed. The vehicle used for a road test must be of the proper class for the type of license you are being tested.

No person except you and the authorized Division of Motor Vehicles employee can ride in the vehicle during the road test. The average test will take 15 to 20 minutes. To pass the road test, you must be able to show you can drive a motor vehicle with good control. During the road test you will be scored on:

If you fail the road test, you must wait at least ten (10) days before you can be re-tested. If you miss your scheduled road test or cancel your test with less than 24 hours notice, then you must wait 30 days to be retested.

Your DMV vehicle record is usually updated within 24 hours after payment is submitted for a RAPIDPASS test. You will not need to provide any information regarding your emissions tests results at the time of registration.
