CIs (and any DI who wants) are to hash out the assignments and how
they plan to teach the assignment skills in class in a discussion
thread beginning Thursday each week. Then, by Sunday, the CIs will
post a brief summary of the "final" decisions made concerning how
students should complete each assignment. This will make it easier for
DIs to grade each paper based on the final decision from each CI and
we won't have to sift through the emails to locate info.

We also talked about DIs visiting the classroom and the extra time it
would add to our DI workloads. We talked about created a "profile" or
bio for each DI instead, which CIs could send out via email to their
students or share it in class. We talked about DIs signing their names
(name/title) at the end of their grading commentary (first name only
if you're worried about students tracking you down) and possibly
including our email address if we wanted to offer students an option
to ask questions to clarify comments (if you felt comfortable doing
so). We talked about asking students to use the "Rank Comments"
feature and including their email address in the comment area if they
wanted to request more information from the instructor. (No formal
decisions were made about these ideas.)

Last, we talked about the peer critique format, BA5 format, and how to
approach banned topics in essays.

*
For peer critiques, we decided that students should write about
100 words to four areas: (1) topic/thesis, (2) discussion of ethical
lens, (3) sources/evidence, and (4) overall essay structure, which
could include a number of different aspects like organization of info,
transitional sentences, topic sentences/paragraph structure/sentence
structure, etc.
*
BA5 format would follow Mark's previous idea to use a "report"
format using the guidelines from page 71 (more info to come on the
Google workgroup).
*
Banned Topics: DIs should grade these as best as possible. Point
out that the topic may be inappropriate for the assignment. Save
commentary, enter & save a grade -- THEN -- submit as normal if the
essay isn't way out there. IF the essay is so poorly written or so
badly handled, then you should flag it (but only after providing
commentary and a grade. This will alert the instructor to the
assignment without placing more burden on the CI to comment on & grade
the draft.
