Hey Group,

Next week, students continue to revise their 1.1 by working on their
conclusions. Again, this assignment reads straightforward so I don't
think there's much room for student misinterpretation. Mark, if you'd
like, you can post your format here. Also, I'm not sure how to "un-
sticky" my past threads. Can you help me out?

On the grading front, we're just below 200 peer critiques. Please get
into TOPIC and grade your share of critiques if you haven't done so
already. In her weekly emails, Dr. Lang has started to single out
groups for any lags in grading; we don't want our group singled out
for that reason. Some of you are still way behind on your weekly
quotas. Dr. Lang has been in contact with many of you already, and
she'll continue to follow up until you're caught up. I'm also hearing
that you will not be able to register for Spring classes until your
grading is caught up.

Have a good week,

-Ryan

Objective: To practice writing conclusions to academic papers

Description: For this assignment, review the strategies for writing
conclusions on pages 98 - 104 of your textbook. Then, copy and paste
your original conclusion from your 1.1 draft and re-read it. In a
brief sentence or two, identify and explain which of the strategies
from the textbook you used in composing this conclusion. If you cannot
identify one of these strategies in your conclusion, then describe the
strategy you had in mind.

Next, revise your conclusion so that it incorporates a strategy from
the textbook other than the one it originally uses.

Finally, write a short summary and justification of your revisions.
Identify and explain which new strategy you used from the textbook and
explain how changing the strategies used in your conclusion will
influence your readers' response to your analysis.

Total length of this assignment should be between 500 - 650 words,
including the original conclusion, the revised version, and summary
and justification

Hi Ryan and all --

I think this assignment is very straight forward and parallels BA7.
Again, please have students state specifically (by name) which
strategy they employed in their revisions, just to make sure that we
can clearly identify what they attempted to do.

On grading -- yes, several of us need to get caught up soon. Peer
critiques were turned in 3 weeks ago (maybe 4 now, starting this
weekend).

I heard that the Composition program has already fired someone for
failing to grade, and this student has to pay back the money he was
paid plus the stipend from the graduate school! YIKES! I knew that
they had puts hold on paychecks before, but I didn't know they would
make you pay back your financial aid too!

I don't think any of us have to worry about getting fired, but I
thought I'd share. There are real consequences for failing to do your
job -- even when it's just grading.

Maybe we can have a grading party (w/o a workshop) and ask Carolyn if
the Comp program would pay for it again. Would anyone come? I can ask
about the possibility at our next Comp meeting on Monday....

1) I can help out if somebody needs to get caught up. I have already
filled my quota for the semester.

2) here's what i was thinking for Brief Assignment #8. the "possible
discussion" points are part of my class plan and are intended to be
integrated with the FYW examples for each conclusion strategy. I
included the list of acceptable conclusion strategies to help remind
students that they need to be specific in their explanations. I've
seen some drafts that have tended to be general. any and all
suggestions, contributions, additions are always welcome.

Thanks Ryan. I definately think that the assignment description sounds
fine for this week. Amber, I will let my students know that they need
to identify what kind of strategy they are using in their revised
conclusions. I appreciate the outline, Mark, and I think I can make
good use of that in class to show students what they need to include
in their assignment 8.
Thanks,
Katherine

Hi, Folks,

I promise I'll finish the rest of the peer critiques by no later than Friday.  I think most of the remaining ones are mine.  I'm sorry it's taking me so long to finish.  Trying to complete 241 peer critiques in a several week time span is just a bit time consuming.  Again, I'm really sorry for the lag!

Also, I wanted to let everyone know that I'm going to be coming to the composition meeting on November 16th.  I've never even met some of you, so make sure you come up to me and introduce yourself!
