Are we supposed to evaluate the quality of the sources that students
use? I have a draft that cites several Wikipedia pages. Thanks!

I think we should caution students about sources ( I tell my students
how a fellow TA at UNM wrote himself in as the author of the Bible to
show his class why Wikipedia is unrealiable), but not deduct for
quality sources until the next draft. Students were on a fairly tight
schedule and learning how to use scholarly and credible sources can
take some time. At least in my class, I'm planning to dedicate a
portion of another class meeting to further discussion of sources.
Hope this helps answer your question (at least for the students in
Section 31).

I suggested to my students to use Wikipedia as a way to find other
sources via the links provided at the bottom. However, I don't think
I emphasized enough that Wiki pages should not be relied on. I'll let
my students know. Are any graders penalizing students for using 1-2
Wiki entries? (as opposed on heavily relying on them) How are graders
dealing with students who use 1 Wiki and other scholarly journals?

Hi, Eric,

For the initial draft, I've not been counting off points for using Wikipedia or other sources not quite as reliable as scholarly journals or books.  I am suggesting, though, that students look at academic sources to support the analysis. I'm noticing that students are relying on the internet for sources.  We may have addressed this issue, and I apologize if I've forgotten, but will students be required to have academic sources for the final draft?

Thanks,

Shelley
