If you haven't heard... just a quick update the match against the British has been rescheduled to March 11th 7pm at Washburn University.

We will have practice this Wednesday at WU practice fields 5pm.

We still play KC Rouges this Saturday at 230pm. KU vs KCRF at 4pm. After party at specks 6pm.

One last schedule change.... Topeka will still play KC Rouges at 2:30 or closer to 3pm. The change is that KCRFC is planning on playing Nebraska University at 1pm. This is good as our rookies will get a chance to see the game and their respective positions prior to the match. Our field prep crew will have to adjust painting and field setup to around 11am. On Saturday I will have "Topeka Rugby vs. British Military" game day t-shirts for sale. They are only $10 and will probably sell out Tuesday at the game. I want to give our players the first chance to buy them before they sell out. Rookies that have not turned in their paperwork please email info asap!

 

No practice schedule tonight. Please get thirty minutes of cardio in on your own time. Jon Cox said it best last night... "Got to get your cardio in outside of practice too..." 

 

Going forward we have decided that we will have practice Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays. All practices will be held at the WU practice feilds at 5pm. I know it seems like a lot but we have quite a few players that work or have class on Tues. and Thurs. On the other hand we have players that have commitments Mon. and Wed. I hope that everyone can get some good attendance in sometime during those days. As always condition outside of practice too. Having one more day of practice in the week should give players that extra edge we may be looking for.

Hey all.

FYI the game is scheduled to kick off at 7pm tomorrow. If possible please try and be there around 530. I know some have class and will be late. On Thursday we will need to do st pats tournament prep at Felker field.

We will have shirts for sale at the game tomorrow and are only $10. They are Topeka vs Brits tshirts. The cost to get in the match for fans is $2 and all goes toward fallen police officers.

Hey guys... We are painting the second pitch tonight at 4pm. Please if you have time to stop by at 5pm we need to raise the goal post and move soccer goals out of the way. The Tournament will be fun like always but we need help to set it up and take it down. After the tournament Saturday please don't run off as we would like to tear down goal post and police the trash.

 

Since we are hosting the tournament and will need last minute setup it would be wise for everyone to show up to the pitch around 8am. Our first match is at 10am. Please try and make it tonight to help set up. The more we have the quicker we are done.

 

Don't forget to bring cash for the snack bar as we will have plenty of great deals and an awesome $5 meal deal. Don't forget for those still needing to pay their dues we can take that Saturday as well.

Tournament/Times

As for the schedule of events... We will try and kick things off a little early at 10:00AM. (Men’s Ref/Captain Meeting at 9:30AM) All games following the opener will be 40 minutes matches. (Two 20 minute halves, 3 minute half-time, 2 minute team interchange. This must be adhered to at all times or the team forcing any tardiness will be penalized 1 try every 2 minutes late) The Men’s championship game is scheduled for 3:00pm. This year we will be at Felker Park again and should have 2 men’s pitches running at all times. We will be playing 2 different divisions with championship game beginning after pool champs are decided (a total of 3 pool games per team. This will determine a pool winner and allow for top pool winners to play in the finals for 1st/2nd.

We have a total of 13 men’s teams coming with each game taking no longer than 45 minutes ~ making this about an 6 hour day. This means we would be able to hit the bar around 4-6 pm (perhaps earlier). (Notice the importance of a strict time schedule, and penalty that is given if violated) The park does have plenty of space to sit and set up a team camp, not to mention plenty of bleacher space for fans. It would be wise to bring your own chairs and pop-up tents just to be prepared for the weather. (In Kansas it could ran, snow, or be 90 degree’s out and sunny, we get it all!) Parking will be available just North of the pitch. The restroom/facilities housed on the softball side of the complex will not be available as they are still winterized. There should be PortaPotties available next to the parking lot. A gas station is just up the street approximately ¼ of a mile away just South of the Park. The trophies/1st place prices will be given out shortly after the championship games.

Hotels

We are working with a Hotel and have got groups rates at the HYATT in Topeka. They are offering a rate at $89. This is one of the best hotels in Topeka and located right off the highway/biggest shopping strips. Topeka is quite small so getting around only takes 5-10 minutes max. When calling in to make reservations request the "Topeka Rugby" rate (only $86).

Hyatt Place Topeka is conveniently located off the Wanamaker Road Exit & I-70, close to the movie theaters & two restaurants; just north of all the entertainment on Wanamaker Rd. St. Patty’s Rugby Tournament T-shirts will be available at an extremely low cost (only $10... cash only). (Buy one early before they sell out! Limited quantity ordered, we sell out every year) Topeka will also have a concession stand with sports beverages, bottled water, soda, and other snacks. (Of course team water is allowed, and no we are not charging an arm and a leg for concessions) As this is such a long tournament a lunch meal deal will also be available. We will have Smoked Pull Pork sandwiches, BBQ baked beans, potato salad, and a choice of Lemonade/Gatorade/water all for only $5!

Topeka RFC also receives support from a local liquor store which is just up the street from the pitch! Grace’s Liquor Store (2617 SW 21st St ~ Topeka, KS 66604 ~ (785)-234-2417) will give 10% off any liquor and wine purchase if you mention you’re with a rugby club. Please if you visit them on Saturday tell them thanks, for supporting local Rugby!! The pitch is on city owned property (meaning alcohol is prohibited), and in a large park so alcoholic beverages will not be sold by Topeka RFC. If one brought their own adult beverage and had it in non-revealing containers it would be on them. I would not drink open containers visible to others… everyone catch what I am saying? Just please find a trash can for all trash.

Party

Teams wanting to go hang out after the tournament with underage Ruggers are more then welcome to travel to Specks Bar and Grill. They are TOPEKA RFC’s home bar and use to rugby insanity. They allow all age groups entrance into the building (must be 21 and over to drink). I am sure that, with this many teams, we will have plenty of Zulu’s and rookies for other shenanigans. Speck’s is no stranger to Warrior Run’s, Boat Races, and Alouettes. Specks will have corn beef and cabbage (a traditional Irish meal) FREE and great drink specials.

Once again guys we have put a lot of effort into making this a tournament for the players, and not to charge teams an arm and a leg. Our honest hopes, for this tournament is to have a hell of a time and to grow the St. Patty's Rugby tournament into a bigger and bigger event each year. Please, Please, Please, contact me if you have any questions, doubts or concerns. Please, whatever it maybe... even to cancel or whatever, better to call me ahead so I can configure a contingency. I will not be mad just need to know.

Hey all practice is canceled due to the weather. Practice tomorrow like normal. GAME this Saturday will be at 3pm Benedictine College. We can plan on meeting at for the car pool at 1230pm WU near practice fields.

Also be thinking if you think you will make the trip to Wayne, NE April 4-6 for the tournament. We will leave Friday evening and return Sunday afternoon. The team will pay for gas and hotel expense (just need some cash for your own food expense). We are teaming up with the KC Blues to compete in the tournament. Should be some great rugby! We will need to know by Saturday if you think you will or will not make the trip.

ANYONE not planning on going to the BC match this Saturday?

We will probably participate in 3 tournaments over the summer. We have been competitive in 7s over the past 4 years. We will do Tuesdays and Thursdays 6pm. Start times will change an become later as the heat of the summer continues.

The Topeka Rugby Football Club is currently conducting training and conditioning for the summer 7s season.  This is great way to continue playing rugby through the summer months and to stay in shape for the fall season.  Anyone who is new to rugby and would love to try out is welcome to come to the pitch as well.  Practices are being held at McDonald Field on Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting at 6:30pm.  These training sessions are being managed by team president, Matt Crawford.  We also encourage all who participate to bring plenty of water as the heat becomes a factor through the summer months.  Anyone who doesn't plan on playing in any tournaments this summer but would love to stay in shape for fall 15s is highly recommended to attend these training sessions. The summer 7s is a side formed from the TRFC team, meaning that no team dues are required to play and the team will only cover some travel costs.  Some tournaments and travel are covered out of pocket by the men participating in the tourneys.  As of now, the team plans on doing at least one tournament a month and has yet to pin point what tournaments that will be played. Summer 7s is a fun and fast version of rugby that will definitely handle one's rugby fix, without all the wear and tear of a 15s game.  We hope to see everyone out for practice!

Gents it is time to get work in this summer. We have a 15s match coming up in 16 days. 

We are doin sprint work at Topeka West high school track @ 5 today. Be there if you can. 16 days till the British match. 7s practice Tuesday, 30 minute Shawnee lake swim & run on Wednesday, 7s practice Thursday, lake swim and run Friday. Get your work in.  

Please get out and get a run in one these days. No excuses not to be in shape for the Brits.

Topeka Rugby practice Thursday night will meet at the pitch around 515pm. We will then head to Manhattan to scrimmage the KSU boys. Make sure you make it out. We will look at possibly practicing 15s Saturday evening and Monday evening to prepare for the British. Prob paint the pitch Tuesday night. Getting super excited about the summer matches, and how great conditioning is going. New match ball order for Brits as well!
