PRESENTER: Ryan Rinehart
TOPIC: A Map to Buried Performance Treasure
Do you write TSQL queries or use a tool that writes queries to interact with Microsoft SQL Server databases? Have you ever needed to determine if your query is performing efficiently or consuming excessive amounts of server resources? Did you ever need some guidance in reading a query plan or determining what it is doing?
If your answer was “YES” to any of the questions, then “A Map to Buried Performance Treasure” is for you. In this session, MCM Ryan Rinehart will walk you through reading that query plan you need to analyze. He will discuss how to view the plan, what the operators within the plan are, what they do and what type of overhead you could see with some of them. How operator and plan costs work and row counts are estimated is important so we will take a look at what is going on there. JOIN algorithms and performance characteristics can affect your performance so they are covered. How to determine the amount of memory your query will request and consume can give you foresight into how the query will affect your database host. To speed things up we will discuss parallelism and how it affects plan execution. And finally, query plan patterns of concerns and how to get more information will be explained.
Ryan Rinehart is a Microsoft Certified Master of SQL Server and has been working with Windows & SQL Server for the past 15 years. He has worked with all versions of SQL Server >= version 6.5 and Windows >= NT4.0. Ryan specializes in HADR & performance tuning of SQL Server utilizing indexes as well as TSQL statement & schema refactoring. He currently works for se2 in Topeka KS managing thousands of databases totaling over 15TB of data across 175 SQL instances with a team of DBAs.
