...can not be scripted. It would be convenient if the panel size and
location can be saved and then restored in the consequent sessions. The
initial request was for the log window, but it shall be generalised I guess.

This capability was added with the UI code facelift after the release of
wxWidgets 3.0.
To store this information - use File/Save properties from the menu which in
turn produces a propsave(...) with a fairly weird string (property of wxAUI
engine) which contains the UI layout info.
It can be reloaded back using loaduiframe(string) or simply execute the
file produced by propsave(...)
