Hi all,

Just an update on my progress of a demo machine for the Install fest.

I think I have just about "nailed" it.

Specs.
1ghz  P3
512mb ram
PNY 128mb 3d PCI graphics card.
O/S Linux Mint 9  (Isadora)
Dual monitors

This will definitely blow away everyone who sees it.
It runs  the dual monitors beautifully and Compiz and the graphics are wow!!
Each monitor has its own individual Cube effect, rotation  etc.

I have run video clips through VLC (with no lag) on one monitor. I also watched  them while "surfing the net" on the second monitor, this did cause a minor lag but being a 1 ghz cpu I can't really complain.
I installed exaile music player and loaded on some mp3  and m4a music files and they played without a problem....I think m4a  are itunes music files, I know Widows Music Player won't play them.
I still need to put on the old webcam, it is a Clicksmart 310, and install Skype for internet chat.
So it is progressing nicely....any one else got any ideas to add to this??

This baby will definitively show that Linux on a p3 and a cheap 3d card  can run rings around any late model P4 with Dual core cpu and gigs of ram running Windows XP or later.

feed back and ideas appreciated,
Warren

G'day Warren,
I have been patiently awaiting the result of your experiments. I
really look forward to seeing it operating - sounds fantastic.
Cheers

G'day,
In respect to Warren's fascinating project I have been downloading the
entire Ubuntu repositories from Hardy to Lucid - and this includes
Medi, Security, Google and Canonical repos. I'm even considering the
Mint repos as they have some very nice programmes.

Why? Cos a lack of internet connection at an Install-fest results in
the installation being only half complete. This way the user gets all
the security updates and any programmes that they want to explore can
be installed on-site. I have tested it and it works fine - all that
needs to be done is replace the sources.list file with a custom job
and update the system - we need to ensure that we replace the original
sources.list file before they leave.

This hasn't been a faint hearted as the total space required for each
Repo is 60-70GBs. I have devoted an entire Passbook HD to these Repos
and I still required another Passbook HD. BTW - I have found that so-
called freezone ftps (from your ISP) do kind of have a limit - after
100GBs of downloads per month I was shaped (went from 500kbs to
100kbs).

Oh, and why from the Hardy distro? Hardware. Even hardware that's
3+yo are having difficulties with later kernels - Hardy has the 2.6.24
and can be regressed to 2.6.22 - which allows a greater range of
Hardware compatibility. My laptop works beautifully on Ubuntu Hardy
and Intrepid but not so well with Jaunty onwards.

Cheers
Martin
PS. Still unfinished.
