G'day,
I have found that hardware compatibility for 3+yo PCs is more complete
with older versions of Ubuntu - 8.10>. There are workarounds for many
hardware issues on older PCs but I prefer that it works, more or less,
straight out of the box.

Case in Point:
Wireless in my laptop does not work in Ubuntu 9.04+ - and after
exhaustive searches of forums I found that there isn't a workaround.
Works fine in Intrepid and Hardy. Same thing with my ATI graphics
card. Able to get a driver in 8.10> but isn't available for 9.04+.
AMD dropped support for legacy cards ( including my x1400 mobile which
is only 4yo).

I suspect other hardware such as audio may have same issues. If
someone has said that Ubuntu does not work properly on their older
computer, it may be that their hardware is not supported any more -
suggest an older version.

I also suspect that other distros may have the same issue.

btw. This is to be expected as hardware support cannot last
indefinitely; especially if the manufacturers don;t support it
anymore.

Cheers
Martin

Hi all,

I tried running Ubuntu Hardy to get the webcam to run but never got that far into it.  I ran into driver issues with the graphics card.

It is a PNY 128mb 3d card  which has an Nvidia chip.
It is said to be a Gforce 5200  but I don't know which drivers to use.  It downloads and installs Nvidia xgfl (?) -new drivers but it won't run dual screens, I installed  nvidia-xconfig  but it says I don't have any nvidia drivers installed  even though a check says they are there and activated....I install legacy drivers  and they delete the Nvidia-new drivers  and I ended up with the same problem.
Oh well,  I will stick with Mint..everything installs intuitively and runs....I will write off the old Logitech webcam as being incompatable  (think "Lexmark z23 printer")...and chase down  another webcam, one that is compatable.

Just tried a Wacom Tablet and it works "out of the box"....my old flatbed scanner used to work ok before it got packed...my mobile phone detects as an ethernet port, but it runs  Windows Mobile as the O/S  so that doesn't surprise me.

PCI sound card is an old ensoniq  it detects in the hardware but not in the Preference but my external (Storm brand) sound card does.

You mention some wireless experience  so I may need some advice. I have an Aopen usb wireless card which I will try and install over the weekend and as my troubleshooting experience is limited I may lay a few questions on you...anyway time for bed,

thanks...warren
