I didn't really feel like cooking so I tried to make a reservation at the Doe Bay Cafe and there wasn't anything until Friday.  Are there any other local places on the island to eat while camping?

btw, this is my first year going to toorcamp.

The cafe is closed Mon-Wed, and only open for Open Mic on Thursday. There are a number of places on the island, though none really walking distance. East Sound has quite a few restaurants, and there are some between Doe Bay & there.

I did stay there a couple of weekends ago, and they were selling breakfast sandwiches out of the office/store in the mornings; and soup and bread in the middle of the day.

You could also order some MREs,  I know there are quite a few vegetarian dishes.  Cooking is quick and involves little effort.

That is, if you can find MREs. In my experience they’re notoriously hard to get.

First time as well and flying in from out of town which limits what I can bring with me.  Are there generally grills available to cook food on?  Trying to figure out the logistics for cooking.

Hey folks!  I'm with Milliways, and I can help explain the food situation.

We have two big grills and a bunch of camp kitchen stuff we reuse for
every Toorcamp.

We usually buy a ton of food and beer up front and then sell challenge
coins to fund that ( we also have a donation jar out ).  We have a
really cool coin this year designed by daravinne.

We're also 100% volunteers, and we will take work in trade.  What does
that mean?  We need need NEED people to volunteer to cook or assist for
a meal at some point during the event.  If you have more money than
some, maybe give us a bigger donation.  If you have less, maybe do a
little more time in the kitchen or something.  We don't really enforce
any of this, it's kind of on the Stone Soup model.  Everyone puts in
what they can and it always seems to work out (but we never have any
idea how).

We'll likely have choose-your-own adventure breakfasts and lunches
(pancakes, eggs, bacon, veggie sausage patties, etc.) and if you're
hungry and  no one is cooking already... just start cooking.  You may
end up feeding a bunch of other people, but that's how it goes (we won't
make you cook for too long).  This is the model we eventually settled
on, because people get hungry at random times (6am, 2am, etc.)  We can
give you a safety training on the grill if you need one, but the main
rule is "Don't leave the marshmallows on the table, the deer will steal
them."

We will have organized and somewhat-planned dinners, and we're also
going to have a DJ and party dome similar to last time.

So... all that said, please please PLEASE email me directly if you're
planning on eating with us, since this will help us estimate how much
food we need to get up-front.  Also please mention any dietary
restrictions or requirements.  We will definitely have vegetarian
options, but it would be nice to know how much we need and if it has to
be vegan or not.  Also, any allergies!

MOST IMPORTANTLY, if you are an awesome cook or have an awesome recipe
that can feed ~60 people, please let me know!  We treat our cooks very
well, and we'll support you with lackeys and stuff.  Even if you have
vaguely-formed ideas, I'll take them.

This is not a club or a "real" organization, it's basically just a
cooperative food and beer scheme that operates in every hacker camp on
the planet.  So... basically if you show up and do your part, you're a
full member... which really doesn't mean anything, but hey there's food
:)  And if you're ever at CCC Camp or EMF or SHA, just find the
Milliways camp and introduce yourself, it works the same everywhere.

We also have a separate mailing list and IRC channel and will be
organizing carpools to some extent, so please ping me if you want that info.

WHISKEYLEAKS

One night of the event, we do something called WhiskeyLeaks, where
everyone brings a bottle of whiskey (or bourbon or scotch or whisky or
???) to share and puts it on a table.  We look at the pile for a few
minutes and then, as a group, drink it.  So... bring an interesting
bottle from your homeland to share.

That's... literally all there is to know about Milliways :)

Looking forward to seeing all of you at camp!

Cheers,

- Ben

Thanks Ben! My son and I would definitely like to participate so put me
down for two coins. I planned and cooked for a Scout Troop for many years
with meals serving up to 125 at a time so I don't mind helping out.

Also the Psychoholics camp is going to be hosting a speakeasy this year,
so after you get your tasty grub on from Milliways, be sure and stop on

Milliways coin is definitely the best option if you don't want to bring food or cook during ToorCamp. But there are a couple markets in town and Doe Bay has open kitchens that are available for anyone to use also. Stop by town on your way in or make a friend with someone going on a run to town. Also by the end of camp, everyone is giving out free food cuz no one wants to try to take home leftovers so just go around and make friends! The Doe Bay store has some really minimal basic staples foods too.

Aw Gh/Milliways

I will bring 50 lbs of flour and 25 lb of oats.
That should be enough to cover pancakes and oatmeal for all of camp.
I can also volunteer cooking.

I may need help getting the foodstuff up there though...

Hi Ben,
My partner Lenore Edman and I are both attending Toorcamp for the first time this year, and we're potentially interested in eating, volunteering, helping out, and hanging out with Milliways.

We're both avid and frequent cooks-- we don't have experience with cooking for large numbers of people, but we do have a lot of aptitude for and experience with many kinds of cooking. We're willing to help out however we can, and think that we'd have a blast doing so.

Our dietary restrictions: We don't eat red meat or seafood. (And accordingly, we don't have experience cooking those.)

We're flying to Seattle, but taking a car from the mainland and can potentially obtain and ferry in supplies or ingredients, if you let us know what you need. (We have ferry reservations and all.)

Our only point of hesitancy-- and hence the late date for writing -- is that we're genuinely unsure about the challenge coin procedure. We happy to volunteer and cover the costs of our food+drink (and a bit more), but my understanding is that one "buys in" with a challenge coin. But is that a $20 or $200 or $2000 coin, or something that we need to compete for in auction, or buy in advance, or something else entirely? I haven't been able to find a straight answer; it may be a secret that only regulars get to learn about... and if so, please forgive my ignorance.

Cheers,
-Windell

The (possibly unofficial) details I got last night suggest there are a few donation levels for challenge coins: $60, $80, or $100.

Last time I just showed up with cash. They will be next to the Shadytel Customer Experience Centre where you can also sign up for landline service.

OK!!!  Here's the deal with the coins.

We accept all sizes of donations for the camp, and we will have a tip
jar out during meals and parties, etc.

However, we will give coins out as perk for donations at or above the
$60 level this year.  If you want to go 80 or 100, we can pass the
savings on to someone broker than you.  We're keeping it in
denominations of $20 this year, though.  We just need to average about
60-75 a person (depending on how many people end up coming) to cover the
food, beer, and some logistics (rentals).  So 80/100 would be great, but
60 is sufficient for a coin.

We're estimating ~100 people for four days of meals, and will be
attempting to stock accordingly.  If we end up getting more people than
we thought, we can organize resupply runs for the whole camp, so it
won't be everyone-for-themselves, we'll just have to deal with it as a
group if it comes up.

Historically, we buy too much food and end up eating a bunch of random
leftovers at the end, but we're trying to be more efficient and actually
are putting together a meal plan this time (initial google doc link
available on request).

ALSO, lots of people want to buy coins just for the coin.  We only sell
these at this event, and we usually run out.  So don't plan on being
able to buy one at the end when maybe they'll be cheaper.  We ran out
last time, and maybe a dubious decision to order the same number of
coins this time, not realizing the event grew by, what, 25%?  So... it's
more likely the last few will get auctioned off or something.  My
point?  Probably best to get one earlier than later :-P

How to get a coin?

1) Go to camp

2) Ask for where Milliways is (by the water, by the Yoga Studio, by Peapod)

3) At Milliways, ask for who has the coins (it'll be me)

Cheers!

Am down for cooking and coining at Toor Camp! I love cooking, and can collaborate well on cooking for large groups.

Are donations cash only or are alternate forms of payment accepted as well ?

Ideally cash, since it's simple, but if you really need to PayPal, BTC,
or barter, we're open to it, just contact me directly.  We didn't bother
with a donation site this year, since it's a medium amount of work and
not that many people end up going that way.

Cheers,

Hey folks! I'm with Milliways, and I'd like to explain what we're
about in case there are new people on these lists since 2018. If
you're not new, you read a version of this two years ago, but please
click on the new survey link and check out the ALL CAPS bits.

We have two big grills and a bunch of camp kitchen stuff we reuse for
every Toorcamp. This year, we're adding a propane-powered PIZZA oven
to the kitchen for personal pizzas and calzones!

We buy a ton of food and beer (and mate`) up front and then sell challenge
coins to fund that ( we also have a donation jar out ). We have a
really cool coin this year designed by daravinne again.

(pancakes, eggs, bacon, veggie sausage patties, pizzas, etc.) and if you're
hungry and no one is cooking already... just start cooking. You may
end up feeding a bunch of other people, but that's how it goes (we won't
make you cook for too long). This is the model we eventually settled
on, because people get hungry at random times (6am, 2am, etc.) We can
give you a safety training on the grill if you need one, but the main
rule is "Don't leave the marshmallows on the table, the deer will steal
them."

We will have organized and somewhat-planned dinners, and we're also
going to have a party dome similar to last time.

ATTN DJs:
We're opening up the DJ equipment to anyone who brings tracks and
wants to try their skills. It's a Traktor S4 mk3, so bring your FLAC
tracks and take a volunteer DJ shift :)

So... all that said, please please PLEASE fill out our food survey so
we have some idea of how many people are coming and what your dietary
restrictions are!

FOOD SURVEY HERE: http://bit.ly/milliways2020food

MOST IMPORTANTLY, if you are an awesome cook or have an awesome recipe
that can feed ~100 people, please let me know! We treat our cooks very
well, and we'll support you with lackeys and stuff. Even if you have
vaguely-formed ideas, I'll take them.

ATTN NEW PEOPLE:
This is not a club or a "real" organization, it's basically just a
cooperative food and beer scheme that operates in every hacker camp on
the planet. If you show up and do your part, you're a
full member... which really doesn't mean anything, but hey there's
food and cool people
:) And if you're ever at CCC Camp or EMF or SHA, just find the
Milliways camp and introduce yourself, it works the same everywhere.
We're on the map.

We also have a separate mailing list and IRC channel and will be
organizing carpools to some extent, so please join the mailing list (
mailing list: https://mail-2.ramdrive.org/mailman/listinfo/milliways )
or #milliways on irc.hackint.org.

Please email me directly at aw...@awgh.org if you have any problems or questions!

Im sorry all,

I have not updated the wiki yet, but it is in the works. Unfortunately I lost a bunch of data during a server fail/migration so need to recreate.

I didn't really feel like cooking so I tried to make a reservation at the Doe Bay Cafe and there wasn't anything until Friday.  Are there any other local places on the island to eat while camping?

btw, this is my first year going to toorcamp.
