Tatkal ticket booking is available on payment of an extra charge on a first-come-first-served basis for all but first AC seats. Tatkal booking is available for all class like 3A, 2A, 1A, sleeper and chair car. Tickets are issued for actual distance of travel, subject to the distance restriction applicable to the train. Once you have booked your tickets, you can check your PNR status.
For confirmed tatkal tickets there is no refund on cancellation of tickets. Waitlisted Tatkal ticket cancellation do have some deductions as per IRCTC rules. You can cancel your waiting list or RAC Tatkal tickets, up to 30 minutes before the departure of the train. If wait listed Tatkal tickets do not get confirmed or RAC, they automatically get cancelled and the passenger gets refund. If your train is running late by 3 hours or is cancelled by Indian Railways, you are entitled to file Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) for claiming a refund.

Premium Tatkal(PT) Scheme is a new quota introduced by the Indian Railways reserving a few seats with a dynamic fare pricing to book the train tickets. Premium Tatkal booking timings are same as Tatkal scheme and it is opened by 10.00 AM for AC classes and 11.00 AM for non-AC classes. The dynamic fare stands for the increased fare charged only for the confirmed passengers, and it is twice that the usual tatkal ticket charges.
The pricing of the Tatkal ticket is defined according to the travel classes, but Premium Tatkal cost changes dynamically. The more the demand for tickets, the higher will be the Premium tatkal fare. Premium Tatkal tickets can be purchased only through IRCTC website, whereas Tatkal ticket can be procured through online sources like Paytm and also at the railway ticket counters. Premium Tatkal ticket opening time is same as that of Tatkal scheme, but users may find tickets under Premium Tatkal even after a few hours of the opening time, whereas normal Tatkal tickets get exhausted within a few minutes.
The rule for Premium Tatkal booking on internet is almost the same as Tatkal booking. Premium Tatkal ticket booking can be reserved in advance of one day before the journey date. Users can book only E-ticket, the I-ticket booking is not possible. No concession is applicable to the tickets under this scheme. Child passengers tickets will be charged with full fare. Users cannot book RAC or Waiting List tickets under Premium Tatkal booking.
