No, she did mean "dilatory." It's just spelled and punctuated oddly to
make clear to the reader that Anton is mispronouncing it.

I agree its a misprint of "dilatory".  the hyphen is not in my copy and would only be there for a line break.

Yes, that's exactly what Anton means: he put off his citizenship
application too long because he was working hard at the lab.

what is the name of that prisoner? in my print one time its written: Quogh. and another : Quogn. which is correct?

The nuances of JCO's writing are often ambiguous even to native English readers.

I can't begin to imagine myself trying to make sense of a story written in.....

I believe this story is included in the collection, HIGH LONESOME. And I am quite sure that "Quogh" is the spelling since the second spelling would be difficult to pronounce in English.

I'm not positive, however, and I have ordered HIGH LONESOME and may soon be able to say more.

I'm translating 7 stories of JCO.
Here we don't have any original books of her.
So i asked her via email to send me some stories with her choose so
that i can translate them and maybe publish them as a collection.
so sometimes i face some problems in reading them.
With all these problems i hope i can manage this translations.
And i hope to introduce her more in Iran.
I hope our government let me publish all 7 stories.
You know here most of the things will be faced with censorship.
Any way thanks for your kind attentions.
