Hi, it's me Michaelangelo. I was a student of JCO. Attached is an article I published in France called "My Year with JCO."

I'm not sure of this question about "rape" and what story it pertains to. Overall, I don't think artists should be under the microscope for what they write, whether male or female. Go figure.

When you read it, I'd like you to answer the same question I just asked Jane: Which chapter do you find most intriguing?

I would also like to know if you think a male author would have been more sharply criticized for depicting rape victims as precipitating crimes against themselves that Oates has been.

Hey, Mile

It's been too long. I wish I'd written a piece for the French publication.   You're in my thoughts a lot.  Hope you're well and happy.

Hi, Michaelangelo!  Did you read my ebook on JCO?  If you did, you should know I'm very much a JCO admirer!
The first chapter examines how Joyce Carol Oates has depicted sex crimes in her work and how wildly contradictory those depictions have been. It is my opinion that a male writer might have been criticized harshly for depicting sex crimes as victim precipitated which JCO did in her early fiction.

Michaelangelo, how much of my ebook did you read over the weekend?
&, of course, what did you think of what you read?

Hi friend, I read your book over the weekend. It was very insightful and brought back a lot of memories from when I studied (74-75) at the University of Windsor with Joyce Carol Oates. Especially the book “Hungry Ghosts,” where she wrote about some of her colleagues; albeit in a ‘fictional manner’ (sic), reminded me of my time there.

I’ve read a lot of the books you’ve written about. I was reading ‘them’ when I was up near Detroit.

Also ‘Expensive People,’ and many of her short story collections.

You have done an awesome perspective on her writing especially about ‘relationships’ between men and women, whites and blacks, societal strata, and much more.

I feel you are right on target with your observations.

Your book could be used to teach an entire semester of JCO.

I’m going to read ‘Haunted’ and, perhaps, ‘them’ again.

Thanks for sharing. If u have any other questions, please let me know.

Michaelangelo

I'm especially flattered by your suggestion that my book could be used to teach a class on Joyce Carol Oates! Thank you so very much!
Since you like my book so much, do you think you might put a review of it up on amazon?

Did you have a favorite chapter?

Hi Ms. Noe, Oh are you are university professor? Since we never met I don’t know a thing about you. What’s your interest in JCO?

Well most favorite chapter is about race relations (white trash, Black).

There’s a lot of Rage in her work; Shakespearean, Greek tragedy.

I’m generally a ‘wordsmith’ and admire her use of language. I learned how to write professionally from JCO.

Have you sent a copy of your book to Greg Johnson? He’s also a fan of JCO.

Peace,

Miguel

I'm no university professor. I'm an impoverished and severely handicapped person who was recently homeless and currently in danger of being homeless again. I started reading JCO when I was a child and maintained an interest in her ever since. Yes, I think she writes bluntly and honesty about the complexities of race relations in the United States. A lot of what she writes in that area rings real with me.

Would you be able to write a review of "Obsessions & Exorcisms" & put it on amazon?

The book is only an ebook. I don't have a hard copy. If you have a link for Greg Johnson, I'd be happy to send him a link to my ebook.

Hi friend, here is Greg Johnson’s  Twitter link. He’s a cool guy.

...Wow your story on how u ‘discovered’ oates is amazing.
I hope you are doing better now.

You should consider sending out your literary observations/critiques to various publications.

I’d start with New York Times ‘Book Review.’

Peace
