Does anyone know how to go about editing the save files? They seem to have some sort of weird encryption. Normally in the past save files are easy to edit in Paradox games, but something seems to be up with these ones so far? Playing a coop game with my wife and she made a few beginners mistakes (We all do!) but rather than start all over again I figured it'd be easier to tweak the save file just a bit to help her get back on her feet. Anyone know how to do it?
Notes:
I recommend having a backup of your save before you modify it (just in case). If you are modifying a steam save, you will need to keep the save file name the same or it wont show up.
I found a bug or have a strange issue, how do I report them?
To help me debug the issue you are seeing, please provide me with a clear description of the issue, steps to reproduce, a save that replicates the issue, the game logs and the log from the editor. you can send these to me via google drive, drop box or discord (@Jamie Wolf) through the battletech game discord (or roguetech, or battletech 3025 extended, or BTA 3062). feel free to post them here as a comment, a bug or as a private message.
Does it work with mods?
Mods that use Modtek to load into the game should be picked up by the scan function. I have used it just fine with BTA 3062, 3025 Extended and RogueTech. If you run into problems, report them to me with mods you are using, an example save and the output log from the game.
My modified save fails to load if I edit it while the game is open
This is due to the way the game is designed. the game does some pre-allocation for the save games, modifying a save may cause it to grow (or shrink), this means the game will fail to load the modified save due to the pre-allocated buffer being too small. restarting the game or editing a save while the game is closed will work around this.
@Fatherofwar could you state the exact location and filetype of your saves. When you say container files do you mean your saves are kept as XXXX.container files or do they have a different ending. Without this information, the save editor cannot be improved on as nobody else has gamepass.

Nudge! : If debug mode is enabled, then the title screen of HOI4 features a big button named "Nudge!" The Nudge tool is a very buggy tool that allows you to see the map in different nudgers and make minor modifications to it. Don't get too excited, this isn't a map editor. It's main use is to fix 90% of all hard crashes within modded HOI4: Any mod that changes states, provinces, factory amounts and building amounts at the start of the game, will not change the location for the 3d models written in the map/buildings.txt file. This will initially have no issues attached, but will seemingly at random cause crashes during the game when the building models are incorrect due to changed states and provinces. To fix this in Nudge, go to "Buildings", click on "Find Error" and then click "Validate in State". Repeat these last two steps until no more errors are found and click Save. The "save" button saves this to a remote file and will not use this file unless you manually drag it to your mod to replace the old map/buildings.txt file. Nudge will save it however within your documents folder:
Playing as for example Germany (Nazi side) you can change the side by: 1. Save the game.
2. Open the default scenario, like "Blitzkrieg" by for example France.
3. Then, playing "Blitzkrieg" load your saved game. You can delete the whole army if you want to.
4. Save the game.
5. Load a default scenario, like "Blitzkrieg" by Germany.
6. Load your saved game and France has no army and you are Germany!
1. Begin a game.
2. Save the game and remember the name.
3. Exit HOI
4. Find the Hearts of Iron directory under scenarios/save games.
5. Find the name of the game with the .eug extension - open it in wordpad.
6. If playing:
7. Either scroll down, or then search for'research_cost_app'
8. The next 4 lines will decide how long research takes. 1.000 is normal - lowering it to 0.250 will make it really fast. Do not go lower than this, as an error may occur as technologies are discovered.
Note: looking through this section and making minor tweaks can change the entire landscape of the game. Also, scrolling down further, you will find generals. Decreasing the Rank = number will promote them - a zero (0) is Field Marshall/Grand Admiral etc. Increasing the skill will make them better. Try not to go too high, as I do not know the limit of the game's logic algorithms. If you make any mistakes simply go back to step one. This does nothing to change the game itself, only your saved game.

The two primary ways to exit edit mode are to either save or cancel therecord (or changes made to an existing record), using the buttons found inthe button block at the bottom of the record.
An easier way to compress the saves on Mac is to highlight the two files, left click and click "Compress 2 Items". A .zip file named Archive.zip will appear: left click on this and click "Get Info". Under the "Name & Extension" section, click the box containing Archive.sav and change
This page lists the codes which may be input into the Console Window, a special debugging window which may be accessed on non-ironman games by hitting ^ , or tilde () (key varies based on keyboard layout). Press the up or down arrow keys to traverse through previously executed commands. Many codes can be turned off by repeating the command, but sometimes reloading the save or exiting the game is necessary. Please note that many of these commands come in and out with each DLC making some of them not work. Mods may introduce commands and more commonly, tags into the game to enhance their gameplay.
This page is intended to assist with editing the EU4 Save File. Before editing save files, it is highly recommended that you create a copy of the files in question. Simple mistakes made while editing can make a save file unplayable. Editing ironman saves directly would require advanced knowledge of the binary format which is used by them, but tools exists which can be used to turn ironman saves into non-ironman saves which then can be edited like this article describes.
Any element in the game can be edited very easily. Any aspect of a country including stats and prestige can be changed. You can open save files in Notepad, but they will take several minutes to load. A more advanced text editor such as Notepad++ is therefore recommended. If the file contains illegible characters, change the extension from .eu4 to .zip, and use a compression program to unzip it.
Cheats override some aspects of the game to facilitate testing, whether by a mod developer or by a player trying to skip ahead and look into more of the game. The main in-game method is using the console command, but it is also possible to use methods like datafile editing (effectively a hard-mod), save editing, and even by changing the program's RAM.
This converter will allow you to take a game from the end of CK2 and convert it into a playable EU4 save, continuing your game. It is compatible with the EU4 to Vic3, EU4 to Vic2 and Vic2 to HoI4 converters, allowing the player to play a continuous megacampaign from CK2 through HoI4. This project, while still active and supported, has been succeeded by CK3 to EU4 converter project.
Q: I loaded my mod, but nothing changed. What's wrong?
A: Is the mod enabled in the launcher? If so, then EU4 refused to load it due to possible errors. Respond to the forum thread and upload your save, log.txt and errors.txt so we may debug.
On Game Pass, the save file is in a folder that is a combination of letters and numbers; it is not named clearly, as is the case for the other platforms. To find the correct file, first scroll down this page and find "Logbook File" and then click "Show complete logbook file." After you have this as a reference, go back to your file explorer, and start opening the files as text documents, any text editor should work. The file you are looking for is the one that is in the same format as the reference.
