The film was written and directed by David S. Goyer, who also wrote the screenplays for the first two Blade films. Goyer had originally planned to make a prequel film about Blade's origins, but decided to make a sequel instead after Snipes expressed interest in returning to the role. Goyer wanted to introduce new characters and villains to expand the Blade universe and appeal to a wider audience. He also wanted to make the film more comedic and lighter in tone than the previous films. He cast Reynolds and Biel as Hannibal King and Abigail Whistler, two members of the Nightstalkers who provide comic relief and romance respectively. He also cast Purcell as Drake, who was designed to be a more charismatic and sympathetic antagonist than the previous villains. Goyer also hired Ramin Djawadi and The RZA to compose the film's score and soundtrack, which featured a mix of orchestral, hip hop and rock music.
The film was shot in Vancouver, Canada from February to June 2004. The production faced several difficulties, such as bad weather, budget constraints, scheduling conflicts and creative disagreements between Goyer and Snipes. Snipes reportedly clashed with Goyer over the direction of the film and his character, feeling that Blade was being overshadowed by the new characters and that the film was losing its dark edge. Snipes also sued New Line Cinema, Marvel Enterprises and Goyer for breach of contract and fraud, claiming that he was not paid his full salary and that he was not consulted on casting, script and other creative decisions. The lawsuit was settled out of court in 2005.
The film was released on DVD and Blu-ray on April 26, 2005. The DVD included two versions of the film: the theatrical cut and an unrated extended cut that added about 10 minutes of footage. The DVD also included several bonus features, such as audio commentaries by Goyer and the cast, deleted scenes, alternate endings, blooper reel, featurettes on the making of the film, visual effects, stunts, weapons and costumes, galleries of concept art and storyboards, music videos and trailers. The Blu-ray version included all of these features plus an interactive trivia game.
