I've worked hard for the past decade and a half to dedicate myself to learning as much as possible about the intricacies of capturing and printing fine art nature and landscape photography. I have paired my love of large format fine art photography prints with a passion and lifelong love affair with nature, natural processes, and the beauty that surrounds us on planet earth. At the age of four I climbed my first mountain in Colorado and from there developed a healthy appreciation and relationship with the Colorado mountains and all of the wonders of nature found therein. This fine art photography gallery is dedicated to nature and my love of prints.
I've hosted some of the world's most legendary nature photo art print makers on my podcast and have learned from the masters in the traditional mentor-mentee relationship model. I created these galleries and organized them in a variety of ways so that you can enjoy the process of viewing my artwork and hopefully find one or more prints that speak to you. My name is Matt Payne - I am a mountaineer and fine art nature and landscape photographer living in Durango, Colorado. I am a fifth generation native of Colorado, and I'm incredibly passionate about it! My favorite subjects are hard-to-reach locations, including the highest mountains in Colorado. In 2018, I completed my life-time goal of climbing the highest 100 mountains in Colorado. As a lover of nature, I have chosen to specialize in large format fine art photographic prints to bring to life my favorite places and subjects showcased in beautiful light.
As a deeply curious person with a profound connection to nature, I am interested in science and natural history. Since my goal is to present my fine art nature and landscape photographs in the best formats possible while providing options to people from all economic backgrounds, I have tested a multitude of labs, papers, and mediums before deciding to utilize the three print mediums I do. One of the greatest things about nature photography is that it is truly for everyone. Photography is an art, and everyone has their own art style. I very much enjoy seeing photos that other people take and learning their process in composing and editing their photos. When you are first exploring the world of nature photography, it can be a bit of a challenge finding your style. Personally, I found it hard initially to try to be original and at the same time take photos that make me happy, but these are some pointers that I followed to help me get to where I am:
Personally, my goal as a nature photographer is to do what makes me happy. My photos may seem like the worst photos in the world to someone else, but as long as they make me happy then I will continue to take more and share them with my friends and family!

The desire to better capture the emotions and feelings surrounding a sense of place helps motivate the photographer to learn. The photographer begins the process of learning the technical aspects of photography: aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focus, angle of view, image development, etc. This is learning photography as a craft. The photographer also begins learning the basics of composition: lines, shapes, patterns, subject placement, light, creative processing, etc. This begins the process of learning the art of photography. But as the photographer embarks upon this path of learning, he or she may feel that some of the energy and enthusiasm that originally brought them to landscape photography is missing. It is easy to get caught up in the technical and learned compositional approaches to photographay. The process becomes almost mechanical and may not be in touch with a vital link to the world of feeling and emotion and who one is as a person. It is at this point that the landscape photographer begins looking for new sources of inspiration.
It can be challenging to create a unique composition in an iconic place, but if one follows their instincts and intuition for what is interesting in the scene and perhaps also receives a blessing from mother nature of unique weather and flora, it is not only possible but also probable. Iconic places are iconic for a reason. They have the power to instill strong emotional reactions and even have symbolic value in our collective psyche that can be tapped into and shared instilling similar emotions in others. Every year individuals and families make pilgrimages to such iconic sites as Oxbow Bend, Yellowstone Falls, Crater Lake and others for precisely this reason. Never underestimate to power of visiting an iconic site.
