Our original plan was to have submitted a whitepaper to NESCent nearly
a month ago, proposing a stakeholder-driven process of envisioning the
future of ToLWeb and developing funding plans based on this vision.
We temporarily suspended that plan due to new information, including
the news that ToLWeb is going to be featured in an NSF AToL proposal
(due in March) developed by Pam & Doug Soltis, David Maddison and
others. One component of that proposal focuses on ToLWeb's
infrastructure. If funded, this means there is a (partial, at least)
plan for ToLWeb, and a project PI in charge of that plan until 2013.
The folks assembling this AToL proposal are interested in working with
the "tolweb2" group and taking steps towards our vision. They have
invited us to participate in the proposal, and Karen Cranston and
possibly others from our group will be collaborators and provide for a
strong liaison. However, the timeline of the proposal does not allow
for the 6-month stakeholder-driven planning process that we imagined.
How we respond to this is up to the group to decide, and that is the
reason for the upcoming teleconference. It's not necessary to call
off the whole thing. One possible response is to move ahead with the
stakeholder-driven process, but broaden the vision of an open,
community-owned "tree of life" resource in such a way that it is not
built on or tied to any currently existing resource or technology. We
would then probably also want to change the name of our initiative to
bear no resemblance to an existing resource. This would not exclude
ToLWeb, which might choose to adopt the vision (or parts of it) and to
participate in proposals that emerge from the stakeholder process.
Please indicate your availability for a teleconference early next
week:
