When I give it throttle it sounds like it is either getting way too
much gas or the timing is retarded and it starts to buck. If I put it
into neutral then it purrs again. Once it is under load it has the
same symptoms. I've checked the vacuum lines and they are all good.
Starboard motor has about 70% of the oil pressure as the port but
marina says it is still with a normal range. If I let the boat cool
down for 2-3 hours and restart the motors, everything is great again.
What is going on here? I did notice that the starboard exhaust is
considerably louder than the port side when I rev the motors in
neutral. Any suggestions are much appreciated.
I am having a mechanical problem on the starboard motor/drivetrain of my 30' 1988 Tolly. I have the velvet drives and twin crusader motors with approx 900 hours on each motor. Both motors recently tuned up but problem still exists. The marina has some ideas but no expertise with Tollycraft. Here is the situation: The boat starts fine and both motors purr at about 700 rpm. Once I get under way I am able to open the throttle and get up on plane easily. After approx 45 minutes of cruising at various speeds, the starboard engine won't go more than 1200 rpm's without misfiring and occasionally popping. When I give it throttle it sounds like it is either getting way too much gas or the timing is retarded and it starts to buck. If I put it into neutral then it purrs again. | Ed, thanks for the info. I will definitely take a look. I just replaced the coil thinking it might be the problem, but it wasn't it. --- On Wed, 6/2/10, Edward Thompson <etho...@gmail.com> wrote: |

I have to say that the feedback I have received from this forum has been nothing less than extrordinary! It is so appreciated and I am following up on the advice I have received from everybody. I have been a boater for 30 years and have owned Chris crafts, sea rays, trojans and a formula. This 1988 Tolly 30' Sportcruiser is my favorite. Lots of character and quality. It's been well taken care of, has no mold (well, probably somewhere) and outside of my motor issue I would get another Tolly in a heart beat. I am the third owner and proud to be part of the Tolly group. I live far from where Tollycraft originated (St. Croix River, WI) and am constantly educating my boating friends on what R.M. Tollefson built many years ago. Have a great boating Season everyone!!
