Due to a wicked July 4th storm, our danforth is again spaghetti.

I want to replace with a delta or bruce, but the pulpit configuration
has the anchor neck to wide to fit - anyone modified this - is it
still strong? Any advice appreciated. Luv my Tolly - BTW 1990 44 CPMY.

Free high tensile danforth, almost new! We were anchored with a Grand
Banks, the Tolly won. Lots of damage to the Grand Banks as her anchor
was not on a cleat but held by the windlass ( a real no-no) and the
storm pulled all the chain rode out of the boat, broke, the line
attached in locker and our danforth took the brunt of the storm. Whew!
Home at last.

We have a Rocna anchor on our Tolly and are very happy with it ----
expensive, but it sets and holds better than any anchor we've owned. I
was able to eliminate about 150' of chain ( and several hundred lbs.)
in favor of 35' feet of 5/8 chain and 150' rope.

Sounds like a hell of a storm......

I am still looking for an owners manual for a 1985 30' Tolly.
Does anyone out there have one I can copy?

A Bruce is the most inefficient anchor. A Lewmar Delta is a much better choice for bottoms of sand mud or vegetation (a danforth will float across the vegetation and drag) Racna makes a great plow. But they recommend twice the weight of other manufacturers which then makes them 3-4 times more expensive as the are about double for the same size delta. The guy that designed them is a long range blue water guy that may need that type of equipment. Do you have emergency position location equip. six man life raft etc.? I have the ability to pick my weather as I am seldom far from shelter. If the forecast sucks, I will sit in my covered berth and watch it blow by. Different type of needs dictate different equipment.

Hi guys,

I have a 1996 45' Tolly. While setting my generic Danforth (probably made
in China) one day in swift current inside the inlet, I snagged on some
coral rock and twisted the anchor pretzel-like. Quickly, I put together
my oversize Fortress FX37 and set the hook first time. The wide shank
allows the FX37 to fit up thru the bow pulpit space, but not fully lay
down to a horizontal position. I too am a big fan of the Rocna although I
never personally used one. I read Steve Dashew's comments aboard
"Windhorse" and he swears it's the best anchor he ever used. I have
talked with a couple of yachters at my home marina who have them and they
love the Rocna. They are heavy if you go with the recommended size, or
one size larger as I do. I ordered a Rocna 25 @ 55lbs but while waiting
for delivery, I went online and printed out a template of that anchor, cut
it out and glued it to cardboard. I then cleared my pulpit of the
Fortress and tried to imagine the Rocna passing thru the same opening
using my cardboard "anchor." OOPS! No way- too wide at the shank. My
next move was to remove the roller under the platform (not all that easy)
and try again. My testing concluded that for the Rocna to work, it would
require some cutting of the fiberglass, reglassing and relocating the
roller. Too much effort at this time, but a project I would endear if I
were doing a lot of cruising. When I phoned the Rocna distributor to
explain my problem and cancel, he suggested next time I consider ordering
the Rocna 33 @73lbs for better "peace at sleep on the hook." One could
also add an anchor roller/mount on the top forward part of the pulpit, but
I'm concerned there might be too much leverage in a heavy blow that might
crack the glass(?).

So what did I end up doing? I purchased one of the new real Danforth
Hi-Tensile anchors. Danforth has several models, Standard, Deepset and Hi
Tensile. I got the 35lb w/ 3800lbs holding power...compare the holding
power with the other Danforths- you will be amazed! This anchor fits the
pulpit like a glove, sets well for me in sand, mud and moderate grass.
While Jon states his "Hi-Tensile" Danforth twisted in a storm, I wonder
what size anchor he was using and if it were set deep or only snagged on
rock or coral??

In a couple of years when my wife retires and we cruise from our homeport
in Florida to Cape Cod and Maine, I will reconfigure my pulpit for the
Rocna, keeping the Danforth as backup and my fortress neatly packed in its
storage bag, chain and rode attached.
